Lucha Underground: Season 2, Episode 1 Review

lucha underground

-We start with Vampiro. He apparently has been in a mental hospital for the last few months. The doctor agrees to let him out, despite still having violent thoughts and not telling the doctor, as long as he doesn’t go back to the place that causes these thoughts. Matt Striker picks him up in the desert. He tells Vampiro the Temple is now a darker place.

-Catrina is now the Proprietor of the Temple, and Mil Muertes watches over from above. Fenix wants to fight Mil, but Catrina tells him that King Cuerno wants a shot at his Gift of the Gods Title. I’m not a fan of bangs on girls, but that doesn’t stop Catrina from still being hot.

Gift of the Gods Title Match: Fenix (c) vs King Cuerno

-Even though I saw it all of Season 1, it still amazes me the distance Cuerno gets on his dive to the outside.

-Not to be outdone, Fenix hits a corkscrew like dive off the second rope over the top. Looked like he spun about 5 times.

-Fenix has that ducky face going on that annoys me. It’s very evident after he hits a double stomp on Cuerno while he is on the top turnbuckle.

-Cuerno ends up hitting a modified tombstone to win the Gift of the Gods Title.

WINNER: King Cuerno- Interesting development after the first match. There was a backstory with Fenix and Mil Muertes so it seemed logical to go there. But Cuerno winning is a good step for him after he took a handful of losses last season.

-Backstage, Son of Havoc, Angelico, and Ivelisse arrive. Catrina tells them they are all fighting each other tonight. They start to protest, but Catrina tells them the winner will face Mil Muertes tonight for the Lucha Underground Title. They agree, then Ivelisse tells Catrina when she wins the Title, she’s coming for her.

-Catrina comes out to tell Melissa Santos the developments. And every man alive gets there hopes up when they get close, but they don’t kiss.

-Catrina congratulates King Cuerno backstage. But she tells him to remember their deal. Cuerno tells her Mil has nothing to worry about. INTRIGUE!

Number One Contenders Match: Son of Havoc vs Angelico vs Ivelisse

-They go for an early test of strength but Ivelisse balks. She ends up eating an Angelico knee in the corner that looks painful.

-I know some people don’t like it, but LU does a good job when it comes to women against men. Ivelisse lands some hard slaps and kicks and doesn’t seem out of place in the ring.

-Speaking of her, Ivelisse crotches Havoc on the turnbuckle and then rolls up Angelico to pick up the win.

WINNER: Ivelisse- Short match. Okay action. I’m interested to see what they do with Ivelisse and Mil next. I doubt this does anything to the relationship of the former Trios Champions.

Lucha Underground Championship: Mil Muertes (c) vs Ivelisse

-Before things get started, the Disciples of Death take out Havoc and Angelico, making this a straight up one-on-one match.

-It’s all Muertes as he throws around Ivelisse and lands some kicks. She tries a choke hold but Mil throws her off.

-Ivelisse hits a tilt-a-whirl DDT for 2. Catrina comes into the ring and Ivelisse grabs her, but Ivelisse moves and Mil spears Catrina. Ivelisse school boys Mil for two. GREAT hope spot.

-Mil then hits a powerslam then the Flatliner for the win.

-Catrina calls for more, but Prince Puma comes out to save Ivelisse. Then from behind, Pentagon Jr. shows up and breaks the arm of Mil Muertes.

WINNER: Mil Muertes- They did a really good job of giving Ivelisse some hope spots in there. The DDT/Schoolboy combo even had me for a second. Interesting developments at the end with Pentagon Jr. With Catrina in charge, does she just keep the Title on Mil? Pentagon Jr. looks like he will toe the line between face/heel. He’s the most over guy they have at the moment.

The show ends with Black Lotus arriving at The Temple with 3 guys who were looking for it earlier. She brings them to Dario Cueto, who lets them in for $20 a piece. They ask who is fighting, and Dario says they are. The three guys then presumably are killed by Cuerto’s brother.

Until Next Time,
