JC’s Top Rope Report: Last Call For The Wyatt Family
In the world of professional wrestling, you only get so many chances before fans stop believing in you. In a way, it almost mirrors the sports world. Sometimes a professional athlete only gets so far and can never win the big one. And while professional wrestling is obviously different from the world of sports, some similarities can be drawn.
Bray Wyatt and the Wyatt Family are on thin ice with a lot of fans. When they debuted, it was something different. They were something that had not been scene on WWE TV in a long time. It was unique. They started working everything out with the Wyatt Family in NXT and hoped that it would translate well onto RAW and Smackdown. But as we have seen with recent NXT call-ups that aren’t female, the handling of NXT call-ups on the main roster have been questionable at best.
When I first saw Bray Wyatt and the Wyatt Family, I immediately thought of Raven. Here is Bray Wyatt, this cult leader who has his followers that believe in every word he says. If Bray tells them to do something, they do it regardless of what it is. Bray would be able to brain wash someone even if they had an earlier problem with them. That would be something similar to what happened with Raven and Scotty Riggs in WCW. Riggs was fighting Raven, but at the same time Raven was trying to convert Riggs and join him in his Flock. And sure enough, Riggs joined Raven in the end. That’s something Bray Wyatt should have been like in the WWE.
But somewhere along the way the WWE screwed up the Wyatt Family. They instead tried to go with the hocus pocus BOOGITY BOO route with the Wyatts. There are many things that went wrong. One of the biggest mistakes the WWE did was breaking up the Wyatt Family without any real direction for the characters, or any reason for the breakup whatsoever. You NEVER breakup a pro wrestling stable without a reason, even with a group as different as the Wyatt Family.
The Wyatt Family also never really had any set goals. What has been their purpose during this entire run? Does Bray even want to be the WWE World Heavyweight Champion? Do they want to just cause as much destruction as possible? The Wyatts have never been given a defined motive during their entire run, outside of jumping from Wrestler A to Wrestler B when a storyline is over.
Perhaps the biggest black mark on the record of the Wyatt Family is just that: their win/loss record when it comes to big matches/storylines. It starts with the John Cena program at Wrestlemania 30. Bray loses a big match to Cena (many people thought he should have won). He picks up a win the next month at Extreme Rules in a cage match that was just awful, and ends with a small child scaring Cena to the point that he can’t leave the cage. That’s the extremes the WWE had to go to in order for Bray to beat Cena. Cena then wins the feud the next month and that is the first mark against Bray.
Bray went on to a couple of singles feuds for the rest of 2014 against Chris Jericho and Dean Ambrose, which he came out on top of. But that didn’t stop the WWE from doing stupid stuff throughout the build. Bray used a hologram to distract Ambrose in his match against Seth Rollins. Then Dean lost at TLC because a TV blew up in his face. All of this was to build up Bray to a match with Undertaker at Wrestlemania 31. The build involved Bray cutting promo after promo, because Taker wasn’t showing up until Mania. So by the end, Bray’s promos were quite tiresome and repetitive. Taker won, giving Bray another loss in a big match. And do you know what annoyed me the most? Bray STILL called himself the “New Face of Fear,” even though he lost.
After Wrestlemania 31, Bray won a quick feud with Ryback before moving on to Roman Reigns. They exchanged some wins but Reigns eventually won the feud at Hell In A Cell. Then Bray, with the Wyatt Family back together and addition of Braun Strowman, kidnapped The Undertaker and eventually Kane. He also took their powers to control lights and fire, which caused the majority of fans to roll their eyes. The problem is that the Wyatts are really bad kidnappers. Taker and Kane returned, got their powers back, and defeated the Wyatt Family at Survivor Series. The Wyatts then beat the Dudleyz in a series of matches, but at this point I don’t think it is enough.
Now we are on the way to Wrestlemania 32. All signs point to a Bray Wyatt/Brock Lesnar match. It’s a unique match, and one that again could help Bray Wyatt. But is the WWE really going to put Bray Wyatt over Brock Lesnar at his stage? It would be a huge boost to Bray’s career if he ends up going over. And maybe that would mean that the WWE is ready to go all in on Bray Wyatt as a top heel for them. But Brock Lesnar has only been pinned by the guys at the top of the food chain in the WWE since his return: John Cena, The Undertaker, and Triple H. Is the WWE ready to put Bray Wyatt in that category? Not only that, but if Braun Strowman vs The Undertaker happened, does Strowman go over Taker? That would be another boost to the Wyatts. But is Strowman ready to take that big of a leap in his career, especially since he’s barely wrestled a singles match longer than five minutes against anyone.
I would say Bray Wyatt and the Wyatt Family are on life support as it is. But if Bray loses to Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania, and Braun Strowman loses to Undertaker, then that will be the final nail in the coffin of the Wyatt Family. Anybody who still believes them to be a threat now won’t believe it after those two losses. I don’t even know what you could do with the Wyatt Family if they suffer another couple losses at Wrestlemania. Bray couldn’t spin it anyway for it to be positive. To me, the WWE missed the ball on the Wyatt Family and there is nothing left that could save them. When Daniel Bryan was forced to vacate the WWE Title, I advocated for Bray to win it and I still think they should have.
No matter how you cut it, this is the last call for Bray Wyatt and the Wyatt Family in the coming months. If Bray doesn’t pick up a win against Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 32, I don’t know how he can be looked at as a top guy, or a credible threat to be Champion.
