The WWE announced that the Fabulous Freebirds will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year. In its prime in World Class Championship Wrestling, the group was lead by Michael P.S. Hayes, Terry Gordy and Buddy Roberts. In WCW, Jimmy Garvin became a member of the group with Hayes and Gordy. Garvin was always considered to be an unofficial member of the group.
The Freebirds/Von Erich feud in WCCW is still one of the best feuds in wrestling history. The hatred felt by the fans towards the Freebirds was immense. The feud put WCCW on the map and made it one of the hottest wrestling promotions in the 1980s. If you haven’t seen any of the feud, I’d highly recommend going out of your way to see some of it.
Another thing the group became famous for was the “Freebird Rule.” The rule was used so that any member of the group could defend the Tag Team Titles at any time.
If you ask me, the Freebirds were the stage setters for factions in wrestling. I’m sure there would have been factions without them, but the group is one of the first and best factions to ever step foot in a wrestling ring. This will also end the long running joke of “When will the Freebirds enter the Hall of Fame?”
