-The show started with Vince McMahon talking about last night. He said he felt some remorse for his son. Shane came out to shake his hand. Vince then decided to put Shane in charge of RAW for the night.
JC’s Take: Hahahaha. What the hell was the point of the match then last night?
-The New Day defeated the League of Nations (Sheamus and Wade Barrett) to retain the Tag Team Titles. After the match, Sheamus said a group is only as good as its weakest link. He then delivered a Brogue Kick to Barrett. The Wyatt Family then came out and attacked the League of Nations.
JC’s Take: So I guess the Wyatt Family’s strategy is that if you can’t take out the top dog, then just go after another mid-card act! I don’t know how I feel about a Wyatt/League feud. The best worker for the Wyatt Family is out with an injury. And the League of Nations still bores me even with Rusev. I’m assuming tonight is Barrett’s last night with the WWE and that was their way of writing him off TV. Wade Barrett is one of the most mis-used wrestlers the WWE has ever had.
-Baron Corbin and Apollo Crews made their RAW debuts. Corbin and Ziggler went to a double countout. After the match, Corbin hit the End of Days on Ziggler on the outside. Crews defeated Tyler Breeze.
JC’s Take: I was surprised Corbin showed up and won the Andre the Giant Battle Royal last night. I know he lost to Austin Aries at Takeover, but I thought for sure he would be the next challenger to Finn Balor. Corbin has improved in NXT over the last few months and I think he can be a good mid-card heel. Crews coming up with little hype in NXT is also a bit surprising. He has everything Vince would like in a wrestler though. Crews has an impressive move set that will get him over with the crowd.
-The Miz defeated Zack Ryder to win the Intercontinental Championship. The finish came when Ryder’s dad shoved down Miz. Miz’s wife Maryse came through the crowd then slapped Ryder’s dad. With Zack Ryder distracted, Miz hit the Skull Crushing Finale for the win.
JC’s Take: Poor Ryder. I know that many people expected his reign to be short. But I could have gotten behind an underdog push for Ryder if done right. I don’t know if this means Maryse is returning full time or not. She’s still a stunner. Miz had a good promo before the match. He’s an effective mid-card heel who the crowd loves to hate.
-Enzo and Cass made their RAW debut as well. They came out after the Dudley Boyz were leaving the ring from their Tables Match with the Usos (which had a botched ending when the timekeeper rang the bell early). Enzo ran down the Dudleyz but no fight happened.
JC’s Take: Enzo and Cass got the loudest pop of the night and I don’t think it was close. Their act should get over on their mic work alone. And the Dudleyz are a perfect team to have Enzo and Cass feud with first. They are a veteran team that I’m sure will go out of their way to make Enzo and Cass look good.
-AJ Styles defeated Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho and Cesaro in a Fatal 4 Way Match to become the #1 Contender to the WWE Championship. It was originally suppose to be Sami Zayn, but Kevin Owens attacked him in the back and powerbombed him through a table. And by the way, for the few seconds Roman Reigns was out there earlier, he was booed out of the building.
JC’s Take: The match itself was very good. Of course, with those four guys it was a given. I thought Cesaro was going to win. I liked the rip off suit Cesaro had on when coming out. Styles really should’ve won last night as well. I think this match sets up our next batch of feuds going forward with Reigns/Styles, Zayn/Owens and possibly Cesaro/Jericho. I think Styles/Reigns is an interesting combo but they should work well together.
-The announcers tried to tell everyone that tonight’s crowd wasn’t a normal crowd. And while I always have a problem with a few of the things they do, that line is ridiculous. People are going to boo Roman Reigns next week as well.
-They did an official ceremony with Charlotte and all the women in the ring. They all walked out on Charlotte. Natalya said Charlotte needed a lesson in humility and put Charlotte in the Sharpshooter. I don’t need Natalya fighting for the Women’s Title. I’m just not a fan of her. The crowd was desperate for a Bayley appearance.
-The Vaudevillians are debuting on Smackdown. That’s another weird call up.
-Dr. Phil is hosting RAW next week. There better be a Dr. Shelby run in.
-No Brock Lesnar or Dean Ambrose. Sure they were probably both selling injuries, but I thought for sure Brock would be there to move into his next storyline.
-For a post Wrestlemania RAW, it really wasn’t that big of a show. The main event brought it up a bit, but no real big moments.
