Lucha Underground Season 2, Episode 16 Review: GRAVER Consequences
-Dario Cueto meets the man who met with the female police officer a few weeks ago. Dario pays the man. The man says this will please his employer. He also warns Dario that he’s getting sloppy, and the police likely have someone inside the temple already. The man says his employer is going to visit the Temple soon, which makes Dario quite nervous.
Match For An Aztec Medallion: Mr. Cisco vs Cortez Castro vs Joey Ryan
-Cortez Castro and Mr. Cisco fight for a minute, but Joey Ryan runs in from behind and rolls up Castro for the win.
WINNER: Joey Ryan- That match was literally two minutes long. It seemed like the match might have been edited. They went to a wide shot of the Temple, then back in the ring for the Joey Ryan roll-up.
-Catrina gives Mil Muertes a pep talk in sinister Catrina form. But when they leave, King Cuerno appears from behind Mil’s alter.
Trios Championship: Rey Mysterio, Prince Puma and Dragon Azteca Jr (c) vs Son of Havoc, Ivelisse and Johnny Mundo (w/Taya)
-Dario Cueto has forced Son of Havoc and Ivelisse to team up with Johnny Mundo. They don’t seem too pleased.
-Ivelisse and Dragon Azteca Jr do a quick move exchange. Both go to jump up at the same time, but Ivelisse stumbles a bit, and the edit doesn’t fully cover it. Ivelisse is shaking off her leg a bit.
-Mundo tags himself in and knocks Puma to the outside. Taya lays the boots to him but Ivelisse tells her to back off. When she gets back on the apron, Mundo flips her off.
-Rey goes for a 619, but Ivelisse pulls Rey down. Mundo then sneaks in and goes for a springboard kick but Rey moves and catches Ivelisse instead. Dragon Azteca Jr then hurricarranas Mundo into the railing.
-Back in the ring, Rey finally hits the 619 on Son of Havoc. Prince Puma then comes in and hits the splash for the win.
-After the match, Taya attacks Ivelisse.
WINNERS and Still Trios Champions: Rey Mysterio, Prince Puma and Dragon Azteca Jr- Match was fine for the time given. I expect Son of Havoc and Ivelisse to transition away from the Trios division for the time being. Who challenges the Champs next is yet to be seen.
GRAVER Consequences for the Lucha Underground Championship: Matanza (c) w/Dario Cueto vs Mil Muertes w/Catrina
-The procession of death starts before the match. The guy who walks on the tall stilts is super impressive.
-Matanza gets all the people in those poor chair seats to move. Catrina hits Matanza in the back with a chair but it doesn’t phase Matanza. He grabs her, but Mil spears Matanza through the chairs.
-Matanza then powerbombs Mil onto three caskets he set up on the floor.
-They fight back up to the apron, where Mil hits a Flatliner from the apron onto the caskets.
-Mil takes apart the bottom rope and grabs one of the steel supports. Matanza blocks an attack and grabs the steel support and hits Mil with it. Matanza then rips apart the mask of Mil and hits Mil with the steel more. Mil is now bleeding.
-Matanza takes too long to set up a casket in the ring, allowing Mil to recover and chokeslam Matanza onto the casket. Mil then grabs a chain link glove and uses it on Matanza.
-Matanza regains the upperhand and tries closing the casket on Mil, but he blocks it with his leg. Mil then punches through the lid of the casket and grabs Matanza’s mask and slams him down into the lid.
-Catrina ends up slapping Dario Cueto. Matanza then hits Catrina in the back with a chair. Matanza takes the stone Catrina carries around and puts it in a coffin. He then puts Catrina into the coffin with it.
-Mil sees this and is pissed. He hits a suicide dive to the outside.
-Both men end up trying to put the other in the coffin. But Matanza finally hits the Wrath of the Gods and puts Mil in the coffin to pick up the win. After the match, Dario opens up the coffin Catrina was in but she is no longer in it.
-As the procession of death leads Mil’s coffin to the back, King Cuerno is revealed to be the one leading the procession.
WINNER and Still Lucha Underground Champion: Matanza- When you compare it to last year’s match, it doesn’t come close. Even from an overall perspective, I was slightly disappointed. I was expecting a bit more violence between both men. The match had its moments but it didn’t feel like the blood feud it was built up to be. At least Cuerno has something to do now as far as storylines go.
-The man from earlier, who we now find out is a councilman, meets his employer. He gives his boss the money and tells him what he told Dario earlier. The councilman says Dario thinks his brother is the most powerful man, but the councilman tells his boss that obviously isn’t true. The councilman calls him “his lord.” Hmmmm. The boss is then briefly shown lighting a cigar but we don’t get a good look at him.
OVERALL: I was excited for this week going into the show and I was somewhat let down. As I said above, Graver Consequences didn’t really live up to the hype. The opener was nothing. The trios match was fine but too short to amount to anything of consequence. The show did do a good job of setting up future storylines for the rest of the season with Mil Muertes and King Cuerno as well as Son of Havoc/Ivelisse and Johnny Mundo/Taya. The behind the scenes storylines sets up for some intrigue as well.
