JC’s Top Rope Report: What A WWE Brand Split Would Look Like
The WWE might have the deepest roster they’ve had in quite some time. When John Cena, Seth Rollins and Randy Orton return from injury, it will only get better. I can’t remember the last time the WWE had so many interesting match-up possibilities. And that’s why I am glad the WWE seems to be going towards this New Era type of booking. Brock Lesnar hasn’t been mentioned since Wrestlemania and at the moment, no one is really longing for his return.
At this point Smackdown is being treated as the kid in the orphanage no one wants. The talk about control has always centered around RAW. No one ever talks about Smackdown. Smackdown is treated as non-existent in the RAW Universe. That is why matches that happen on Smackdown also happen on the next RAW. It is like the show doesn’t matter from a storyline perspective.
With so much talent at the WWE’s disposal, why not make use of it by showcasing wrestlers on their own shows? That’s right, I’m here to say the brand split should be brought back. Now of course, any brand split should also result in RAW being brought back down to 2 hours. While the WWE has a good amount of talent right now, a split roster could not fill a 3 hour show. Even with a full roster and the good shows WWE has been putting on recently with RAW, the show still drags a bit.
So how exactly are we going to work this? First of all, we only have one Champion between both brands. By the end of the previous brand split, the World Heavyweight Championship was nowhere near the same level of the WWE Title. I’m also allowing the Women’s Champion and the Tag Team Champions to appear on both shows. The only titles that are brand exclusive are the United States and Intercontinental Championships. We will stick the US Title on RAW and the IC Title on Smackdown. I’m not going to play the guessing game with NXT guys, so they are not included in this draft.
So, if we are going into this brand split with the current Champions as is, this is what my brand split would look like.
WWE Champion- Roman Reigns, Women’s Champ- Charlotte, Intercontinental Champ- Miz, United States Champion- Kalisto, Tag Team Champs- New Day
RAW- AJ Styles, Sami Zayn, Seth Rollins, Bray Wyatt, Rusev, Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, Apollo Crews, Baron Corbin, Neville, Tyler Breeze, Stardust, Zack Ryder, Sin Cara, Fandango, Curtis Axel, Jack Swagger, Enzo and Cass, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, Primo and Epico, the Ascension, Sasha Banks, Naomi, Natalya, Paige, Tamina
Smackdown- John Cena, Cesaro, Kevin Owens, Alberto del Rio, Dean Ambrose, Sheamus, Dolph Ziggler, Luke Harper, Titus O’Neil, Erick Rowan, Braun Strowman, Darren Young, R-Truth, Heath Slater, Bo Dallas, R-Truth, The Usos, The Vaudevillians, The Dudley Boyz, Becky Lynch, Emma, Dana Brooke, Nikki Bella, Alica Fox, Summer Rae
Here Are Some Notes:
-I left off the following people from the WWE’s roster page: Adam Rose (likely not coming back), Ryback (almost definitely not coming back), Brie Bella (I’d be surprised if she comes back after becoming a mom), Big Show/Goldust/Mark Henry (time to retire)
-John Cena becomes the face of Smackdown. If you want to build that show up from the start, you put the face of your company on it. RAW has been fine without him.
-If you break it down by Top 3 faces/heels on each show you are looking at RAW like this: Seth Rollins, AJ Styles, Sami Zayn and Bray Wyatt, Rusev and Randy Orton. On Smackdown you have John Cena, Cesaro, Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens, Alberto del Rio and Sheamus.
-I broke away Bray Wyatt from the rest of the Wyatt Family. It is time to let him fully sink or swim on his own.
-This would obviously leave some guys the opportunity to step up their game. Baron Corbin and Apollo Crews would get bigger roles on RAW.
-I would have a rule that from the Royal Rumble to the RAW after Wrestlemania that wrestlers can cross over and appear on both shows without consequence. That sets up inter-promotional matches for Wrestlemania.
So what do you think? Do you want to see a brand split again in the WWE?
