King Cuerno vs Mil Muertes
-I’m guessing this ends in a non-finish. I thought for sure this would be saved for Ultima Lucha.
-Mil with the Spear and then some ground and pound. Look out Brock!
-Cuerno finally gets some offense in with a knee to the face.
The WWE fans are all talking about the upcoming brand split. For most, they look at it as an opportunity for some new faces to make a name for themselves on TV. They are looking forward to seeing who ends up on what brand. Will there be 2 World Champions? Will the Women’s and Tag Team Champions be allowed to appear on both shows? Who will run each show? There are a lot of questions that remain unanswered.
Of course, the WWE did a brand split once before. It started off strong. But eventually, it became less and less of a hard brand split. More talent showed up on RAW and Smackdown was once again treated like an inferior product. The hope is that this brand split doesn’t end up like that.
A little change up to my usual column this week!
1. Roman Reigns Still Being In The WWE Title Match At Battleground Is A Joke
-This has nothing to do with the ability of Reigns as a performer. This has everything to do with his 30 day suspension. The fact that they let Seth Rollins acknowledge the suspension on TV means they are ok with people knowing about it. Simply take Reigns out of the match and save the triple threat as a possibility for SummerSlam if Brock Lesnar gets KO’d.
Five years ago today, CM Punk delivered a promo that catapulted him to the top of the WWE and got the entire wrestling world talking. While CM Punk was already a World Champion at this point, many didn’t think of him as a main eventer. His pipe bomb promo changed that. It was something that hadn’t been done in quite some time.
-Sorry for the delay here. I’ve worked until 6 the last three days and then did something immediately after. This is the first time I’ve been able to sit down in 3 days without falling asleep.
-Dario is in his office with a new luchador called Night Claw. Dario gives him a medallion for the Gift of the Gods match at Ultima Lucha. Night Claw has a black panther like mask.
-So all six matches tonight are for Aztec medallions.
2016 has already been a very good and oddly satisfying year in the WWE as the majority of the top spots in the WWE is held by Internet beloved guys like Kevin Owens, AJ Styles, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn and Cesaro. Shane McMahon’s presence continues to be seen on screen and NXT is full steam ahead. Now just weeks away the WWE is doing something NO ONE could have expected or predicted to ever see, the Cruiserweight Classic exclusively on the WWE Network. Not just the idea but the talent the WWE is bringing into, hopefully for most, not just a one time deal. Zack Sabre Jr, Kota Ibushi and Johnny Gargano headline an all star tournament of guys weighing 205 pounds or less.
The WWE hasn’t done the best job of promoting the event as the talent arrived in Florida today but announcing Daniel Bryan and Mauro Ranallo as the commentators for the tournament will surely help the ratings. But the one question the remains, how are you going to get the younger fans or the quote un quote part time fans to tune in?
Out here of the gate I completely expect the returning Tajiri and Brian Kendrick to put over the likes of Drew Gulak, TJ Perkins, Cedric Alexander or Akira Tozawa. This tournament, when it was announced and all of the talent was revealed it became a fantasy bookers wet dream; it also became almost impossible to not only figure out who’s going to win it but who’s going to beat who?
My final eight:
Zack Sabre Jr. v. Drew Gulak
Cedrick Alexander v. Akira Tozawa
Johnny Gargano v. Tommaso Ciampa
Kota Ibushi v. Rich Swann
All eight of these guys are beyond great in the ring and all have made names for themselves heading into the tournament. Aside from Gargano, Swann and Ciampa, who have NXT contracts or at least agreements, I hope and would expect the WWE to offer contracts to the other five. As far as the tournament I think we will see Johnny Gargano go up against Zack Sabre Jr in the finals with ZSJ winning it all.

WWE.com recently released the following:
STAMFORD, Conn. — WWE has suspended Joe Anoa`i (Roman Reigns) for 30 days effective immediately for his first violation of the company’s talent wellness policy.
Reigns issued a statement on Twitter regarding his suspension:
-RAW started with Dean Ambrose. He talked about hard work finally paying off and all the partying he did last night. Roman Reigns came out and said last night wasn’t his night and congratulated Ambrose. Reigns wanted his rematch but Seth Rollins interrupted. Rollins said he beat Reigns fair and square and didn’t rightfully lose his Title. Shane made Seth vs Roman for later in the night to determine the #1 Contender. The match ended in a double countout. Dean said he would fight them both, so Shane made a Triple Threat at Battleground.
The WWE sent out the following release today on their website regarding the upcoming Draft:
