Lucha Underground Season 2 Episode 19 Review: Matanza vs Cage
Son of Havoc vs Daga
-I’m still not completely sold on Daga. It’s not that he is bad at all. He just seems somewhat bland.
-It is weird seeing Son of Havoc on his own.
-Daga isn’t happy with some of the referee’s counts and tells him about in Spanish.
-Oh good here comes Kobra Moon as Daga lands an uppercut in the corner.
-Son of Havoc starts a comeback and it ends with a suicide dive to the outside on a poor unsuspecting fan.
-Kobra Moon tries interfering but Son of Havoc knocks her off the apron. Both men end up on top and Son of Havoc knocks Daga off and hits the Shooting Star Press for the win.
-After the match Kobra Moon tries to pretty much give Daga, um, some pleasure but Daga shoves her away.
WINNER: Son of Havoc- Kobra Moon may be my least favorite LU character now that Chavo had a decent match last week. Match was okay. Nothing crazy. I hope Son of Havoc doesn’t get lost in the shuffle at LU.
-Dragon Azteca Jr tells Rey Mysterio that he found the cell where Dario keeps Matanza. Rey says Dragon isn’t ready. Prince Puma comes in and says they have a match. Rey says this doesn’t concern him and tells Puma to leave. Dissension!
Trios Championship: Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans and PJ Black (c) w/Taya vs Rey Mysterio, Prince Puma, and Dragon Azteca Jr
-All the heels get a slow mo entrance and are wearing matching red bandannas. These guys are the best combination of douchebag heels.
-Rey actually starts the match this week and gets the upperhand on PJ Black early. That is until the heels distract the ref and Rey eats a low blow.
-The heels dominate Rey until he gets out of a powerbomb with a DDT then makes the hot tag to Prince Puma.
-Nice spot where Puma and Dragon Azteca Jr hit a double enziguri kick on Jack Evans in the corner, then along with Rey they hit a triple dropkick.
-Puma and Evans go to the top. Puma suplexes Evans onto all four other participants on the floor.
-Puma goes for the 630 splash but Mundo and Black pull Evans out of the way. Evans then hits the 630 splash but Puma kicks out at two.
-Dragon Azteca Jr and Johnny Mundo get tagged in. Dragon hits his tilt-a-whirl DDT which continues to look awesome.
-Taya distracts the ref so Mundo low blows Draogn Azteca. Puma and Rey complain. Puma ends up low blowing Mundo right in front of the ref, causing a DQ.
-Puma is still frustrated, so he superkicks Taya as Rey and Dragon Azteca hold Puma back.
WINNERS via DQ and STILL Trios Champions: Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans and PJ Black- The match was good. And I was fine with the ending. It sets up tension between the good guys and leads to a possible match between them down the line. The Champs are the perfect combination of heels. My guess is Fenix gets a Trios team together for the end of the season. Probably a team with Aerostar and Drago.
-Dragon Azteca Jr goes to Matanza’s cage but Black Lotus is there. He tells her Matanza killed her parents. Black Lotus says it isn’t the truth. She pushes Dragon towards the cage but pulls him back before Matanza can strike.
Lucha Underground Championship: Matanza (c) w/Dario Cueto vs Cage
-I still HATE that this match is just being thrown out there with one week’s notice.
-A test of strength early and neither man budges. Cage eventually catches Matanza with an uppercut then a tilt-a-whirl hurricarrana and a swanton to the outside!
-More Cage awesomeness as he hits a moonsault from the top to the outside then powerbombs Matanza into the rails.
-Cage lifts the mat on the outside up. This allows Matanza to recover and he slams Cage into the rails and hits a gut wrench slam and German suplex.
-Matanza goes for a standing moonsault but Cage gets his knees up. Matanza didn’t get enough of a jump anyways and lands his head directly on Cage’s knee.
-Cage is on his A game tonight. He slides under Matanza and hits a pump handle slam.
-Both men exchange German suplexes and each get up immediately after taking one. Matanza eventually wins out and knocks Cage out with one.
-Cage hits a discus clothesline then suplexes Matanza from the apron to the inside of the ring, then hits an elbow but only gets two.
-Cage connects on an Alabama Slam then a standing moonsault for two.
-Matanza gets out of Weapon X and hits a belly-to-belly and a sitdown powerbomb for two.
-Cage lands a barrage of kicks and goes for the discus clothesline, but Matanza catches him and hits the Wrath of the Gods for the win.
WINNER and STILL Lucha Underground Champion: Matanza- That was one hell of a match. I would love to see these two get a rematch. It was better than Graver Consequences. I was pulling for Cage at the end to win. It was a standout performance for him. Matanza was good as well. Very good main event.
OVERALL- Solid episode with a decent opener, another good Trios match which teased trouble between the three squeaky clean babyfaces, and a very good big man main event. Can’t ask for much more in a one hour show. I suspect in the coming weeks, the storylines and matches for Ultima Lucha will be set.
