Predicting the CruiserWeight Classic, Sort of.
2016 has already been a very good and oddly satisfying year in the WWE as the majority of the top spots in the WWE is held by Internet beloved guys like Kevin Owens, AJ Styles, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn and Cesaro. Shane McMahon’s presence continues to be seen on screen and NXT is full steam ahead. Now just weeks away the WWE is doing something NO ONE could have expected or predicted to ever see, the Cruiserweight Classic exclusively on the WWE Network. Not just the idea but the talent the WWE is bringing into, hopefully for most, not just a one time deal. Zack Sabre Jr, Kota Ibushi and Johnny Gargano headline an all star tournament of guys weighing 205 pounds or less.
The WWE hasn’t done the best job of promoting the event as the talent arrived in Florida today but announcing Daniel Bryan and Mauro Ranallo as the commentators for the tournament will surely help the ratings. But the one question the remains, how are you going to get the younger fans or the quote un quote part time fans to tune in?
Out here of the gate I completely expect the returning Tajiri and Brian Kendrick to put over the likes of Drew Gulak, TJ Perkins, Cedric Alexander or Akira Tozawa. This tournament, when it was announced and all of the talent was revealed it became a fantasy bookers wet dream; it also became almost impossible to not only figure out who’s going to win it but who’s going to beat who?
My final eight:
Zack Sabre Jr. v. Drew Gulak
Cedrick Alexander v. Akira Tozawa
Johnny Gargano v. Tommaso Ciampa
Kota Ibushi v. Rich Swann
All eight of these guys are beyond great in the ring and all have made names for themselves heading into the tournament. Aside from Gargano, Swann and Ciampa, who have NXT contracts or at least agreements, I hope and would expect the WWE to offer contracts to the other five. As far as the tournament I think we will see Johnny Gargano go up against Zack Sabre Jr in the finals with ZSJ winning it all.
