Quick Hits: WWE Battleground 2016

The Usos vs Breezango

-It is now Shirtless Uso and Shirt Uso. But good thing Mauro is calling this match, because he can actually tell the difference between them.

-Tyler Breeze eats an enziguri and goes right into the crotch of his partner Fandango.

-Superkick party from both teams.

-Breeze gets his knees up and gets a small package for the victory. Fun match.

WINNERS: Breezango

Sasha Banks and Bayley vs Charlotte and Dana Brooke

-Sasha’s mystery partner was Bayley. She came out to a HUGE ovation.

-The heels jump Bayley and Sasha as they are finishing up Bayley’s entrance.

-Sasha gets worked over but she makes the hot tag to Bayley. Bayley dominates but Charlotte distracts her and Dana pulls out Bayley’s leg and Bayley hits her head on the turnbuckle.

-Bayley makes the hot tag to Sasha now who hits her offense.

-Sasha applies the Banks Statement but Dana pulls Charlotte out of the ring.

-Bayley takes out Dana Brooke, Charlotte takes out Bayley. Back in the ring, Sasha reapplies the Banks Statement. Charlotte taps out.

WINNERS: Sasha Banks and Bayley: Good match to get the crowd going. If the partner was anyone but Bayley, the crowd would have been disappointed. Bayley will have a place on the main roster for a long time. JBL said this is a one time deal for Bayley. I could see her coming up full time after SummerSlam.

New Day vs The Wyatt Family

-The Wyatts dominate Kofi early as Xaiver continues to sell fear on the apron.

-Bray delivers a hard clothesline and Kofi barely misses landing on his head.

-Bray stares down Xaiver and he backs off the apron.

-Kofi gets his feet up and ducks a Bray charge and makes the hot tag to Big E.

-All hell ends up breaking loose. Kofi hits a dive to the outside.

-Xaiver and Bray end up in the ring. Xaiver starts to kneel down in front of Bray. Bray ducks a Kofi dropkick. Xaiver comes back and starts beating the hell out of Bray.

-Kofi and Big E take out Rowan and Strowman. Bray does his spider walk and freaks out Xaiver again. Bray ends up hitting Sister Abigail for the win.

WINNERS: The Wyatt Family: By the numbers six man tag. The heels dominated early and often. Most of New Day’s offense was very quick and at the end. Xaiver standing up to Bray was a cool moment, but he fails in the end. Surprised New Day lost considering the Wyatts are splitting up because of the Draft, and I don’t think a rematch is in the plans.

United States Championship: Rusev (c) vs Zack Ryder

-Hot damn Lana.

-Ryder comes out looking like he stole a Bayley jacket and colored it USA colors.

-Rusev works over the mid-section of Ryder during the early part of the match.

-Rusev drops Ryder on the barricade. But Ryder moves out of the way of a Rusev charge and hits Rusev with a missile drop kick.

-Back in the ring, Ryder hits the Rough Ryder. He goes for the elbow drop but Rusev gets his knees up. Rusev hits a kick to the head and applies the Accolade to get the win.

-After the match, Mojo Rawley comes out to save Zack Ryder.

WINNER and STILL United States Champion: Rusev- Not much of a match. Ryder only gets in like three minutes of offense every match and it is almost always the same moves. Mojo coming to save him means we are likely getting the Hype Bros on Smackdown.

Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens

-The match starts outside of the ring as Owens tosses Zayn into the barricade.

-Owens drops Zayn on the ropes and follows it up with a kick to the back and a running senton.

-Owens dominates the early part of the match. Zayn escapes a headlock with a clothesline and Michinoku Driver.

-Zayn goes for a springboard dive to the outside but messes it up. He still connects with a kick to the head but lands HARD shoulder first on the apron.

-Zayn runs into a Superkick. Owens applies a crossface and works over the arm Zayn fell on.

-Owens hits some clotheslines in the corner. But Zayn catches him and hits an Exploder Suplex in the corner.

-Owens gets out of the way of a Helluva Kick. They go to the apron where Zayn hits Owens with a Brainbuster. Ouch.

-They end up throwing punches in the ring. They go to the outside. Zayn goes for his tornado DDT but Owens catches him with a superkick.

-Back in the ring, Owens hits the cannonball followed by a Bullfrog Splash but only gets two.

-Owens goes for the Popup Powerbomb. Zayn stops himself in the ropes. Zayn hits a Tornado DDT followed by two chimera suplexes. Zayn only gets two.

-Owens hits the Popup Powerbomb but Zayn gets his foot on the ropes.

-Owens slaps Zayn and tells him he hates him and asks why he won’t stay down. Zayn tells him to keep bringing it.

-Zayn recovers and hits another Exploder Suplex and a Chimeraplex. He then hits a Helluva Kick. Zayn grabs Owens and looks at him, then puts Owens in the corner again and hits another kick for the win.

WINNER: Sami Zayn- What a match. I know I said these guys probably won’t stay separated long and they needed a break. But hell, after that match, these two really could keep fighting forever for all I care. The final ten minutes were great wrestling. It was two guys who clearly know how to work a crowd and did one hell of a job doing it.

Natalya vs Becky Lynch

-Natalya pulls Becky’s leg down in between the apron and lands some kicks, then throws Becky into the steps.

-Natalya continues to work over the leg of Becky, perhaps for a bit too long.

-Becky starts her comeback. Both women exchange submission attempts. Natalya applies the Sharpshooter but Becky gets to the ropes.

-Becky hits a missile dropkick and lands some blows in the corner. But Natalya kicks the leg out from under Becky while the ref is trying to break them up. Natty applies the Sharpshooter and Becky can’t escape this time.

WINNER: Natalya: Okay match. Natalya worked over the leg for a bit too long. Becky needed a win here I think. I don’t like that both women are on the same brand as this feud probably continues.

Intercontinental Championship: The Miz (c) vs Darren Young

-Young tries to do some amateur wrestling early on.

-Maryse screams at Young as he is on the turnbuckle. For some reason this distracts Young, and Miz knocks him off the apron.

-The theme of the night is heels on offense for a very long time. And it is killing this match.

-Young finally gets some offense in but Miz blocks the Crossface Chicken Wing.

-Maryse slaps Bob Backlund and plays it off as Backlund pushing her. Miz shoves down Backlund. Backlund rips his shirt off and looks about to go nuts. Young applies the Crossface Chicken Wing outside. Match gets thrown out.

Double Countout: Pretty boring match. Young was looking down at his hands like Mid-90s Backlund after the match. Crazy Darren Young might be fun.

John Cena, Enzo Amore and Big Cass vs AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson

-Enzo’s promo was awesome before the match. No way to describe it. And my description wouldn’t do it justice. Go find it and watch it.

-Enzo takes out the heels outside with a dive and Big Cass follows with one of his own.

-Back in the ring the heels quickly get to work on Enzo and beat him down.

-Enzo ends up on the outside and ducks charges from all three Club members. He goes for a tag back in the ring but Anderson comes from out of nowhere and hits him with a knee.

-Cena finally gets the hot tag and goes to work on Styles. He hits the Five Knuckle Shuffle. Styles lands on his feet during an AA attempt and hits a Pele Kick.

-Enzo catches AJ with a DDT. Anderson hits a Spinebuster on AJ. Big Cass hits a fallaway slam on Anderson. Gallows hits a sit out powerbomb on Cass. Enzo goes for a crossbody but hits Cena. Cena rolls through and tosses Enzo into Gallows. Cena ducks a Phenomenal Forearm and AJ hits Gallows.

-Cena hits an AA. Anderson pulls Cena out of the ring. He hits a Spinebuster on Cena on the German announce table. Cena beats the count in.

-AJ hits the Styles Clash but Big Cass pulls him out of the ring.

-Gallows and Anderson hit the Magic Killer on Cena. Enzo is hyped up and wants to fight both of them.

-We end up with Styles and Cena back in the ring. They both go to the top. Cena hits an AA off the second rope for the win.

WINNERS: John Cena, Enzo Amore and Big Cass: Fun match. It was a real hectic last five minutes with everyone hitting a big move. I’m surprised the WWE didn’t try to highlight Big Cass more in the match as he was kind of an afterthought. Enzo was the star of the show from start to finish. I thought the faces would win, but I’m surprised Cena pinned AJ. I’m fairly certain we will get Cena/Styles at SummerSlam.

Randy Orton On Chris Jericho’s Highlight Reel

-Orton talks about how he is happy to be there, even if he has to share the ring with Jericho. Jericho updates him with everything that has happened. Jericho says that he is here to help Orton by giving him the Gift of Jericho. Orton teases RKO’ing him. Orton said he had to see if Jericho really looked like Ellen. Jericho plays a highlight package of Brock and says he thinks Orton is scared of Lesnar. Orton said he wanted to make an epic return. His return wouldn’t have had much of an impact if he were to fight Fandango. Jericho says Brock is going to kick Orton’s ass at SummerSlam. Orton said it only takes one RKO to get to Viperville, “no enhancement needed.” WOW.

Jericho ran down some things Lesnar said about Orton, including calling him a stupid idiot. Orton faked one RKO, then finally hit one. That was much better than expected. Orton looked motivated. And that line about “no enhancement needed” was a great burn.

WWE Championship: Dean Ambrose (c) vs Seth Rollins vs Roman Reigns

-The WWE couldn’t turn down the crowd mics anymore during the entrance of Roman Reigns if they tried.

-Seth tries getting everyone to do the Shield fist bump but Roman is having none of it.

-Roman and Dean take a few turns tossing Seth out of the ring and both exchange near falls.

-Reigns gets tossed into the stairs. He recovers and tosses Rollins over the barricade. Ambrose then runs across all the announce tables and dives onto both of them.

-Ambrose hits an elbow for two. As Ambrose rolls off the pin Rollins comes right into the picture and hits a frog splash.

-Reigns gets his chance to sign. He hits Superman Punches (but not much air on the jumps) on both men. They both kick Reigns during the Spear attempt. Rollins hits an enziguri on Ambrose. Reigns with a Superman Punch to Rollins, Ambrose bounces off the ropes and hits a hard clothesline on Reigns.

-Ambrose and Rollins hit dives on the outside. They decide to take out Reigns and powerbomb him through the Spanish announce table.

-As Ambrose is recovering, Rollins pulls a chair out from under the ring and uses it on Ambrose and Reigns.

-Rollins goes for a buckle bomb, but Ambrose reverses it into a hurricarrana.

-Both men end up on top. Rollins hits a superplex into a Falcon Arrow.

-Reigns comes back into the match and hits a couple of powerbombs and a Superman Punch on Ambrose. Rollins comes into the ring and hits a Pedigree but only gets two.

-Rollins hits a buckle bomb on Reigns but he bounces right back and hits a Superman Punch. Reigns hits a Spear. Ambrose pulls Reigns off of Rollins and hits Dirty Deeds for the win.

WINNER and STILL WWE Champion: Dean Ambrose- WOW, that result is surprising. In less than a week, Ambrose has pinned Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns clean. He has been booked really strong over the last few weeks and it is great if they want to push him as a top guy. The match was great and you have to credit all three men involved. And yes, that includes Roman Reigns. The match had good spots. I especially liked the Rollins chair shot on Ambrose.

OVERALL: I thought Battleground was a very good show. The show started off hot with Bayley appearing to be Sasha’s partner. Owens/Zayn was great. I think it was just a tad better than the main event. But if people liked that better I won’t argue. The Cena/Enzo/Cass vs Club six man was fun, albeit a bit choreographed too much at times. Enzo is one of the best things in the WWE right now. Both women’s matches were solid. The Orton/Jericho segment was much better than I expected. Even the mid-card Title matches were passable. All in all, this was a solid show.

So where does this leave us for SummerSlam? With the WWE Title on RAW, I don’t know who steps up to face Dean Ambrose. You have to assume Styles/Cena is happening. And with Orton taking on Brock, does that mean Bray steps up to face Ambrose? I guess you are looking at:

Orton/Lesnar

Cena/Styles 2

Ambrose/Bray WWE Title

Reigns/Rollins

Zayn/Rusev US Title

New Day/Enzo and Cass Tag Titles

Sasha/Charlotte Women’s Title

That’s a pretty solid line-up and you can obviously add matches with the likes of Kevin Owens, Cesaro and Chris Jericho.

Fun night of wrestling with some great story telling involved.

Until Next Time,

Justin C
