When the WWE signed Indy sensations Kevin Owens, Finn Balor and Hideo Itami two years ago everyone who was familiar with their work knew the WWE’s roster got 100% more talented at that exact moment. Last Sunday at Summerslam Balor became the first WWE Universal Champion. Unfortunately, for Finn and the entire WWE, he was injured in that same match. Very fortunately for Kevin Owens a new champion needed to be crowned and the king took his thrown this past Monday.
Kevin Owens’ debut in NXT with nothing short of a hero’s welcome as he defeated CJ Parker while suffering a broken nose. Later that night the hero became the villain after Owens attacked his then best friend and, at the time, NXT Champion, Sami Zayn. Owens quickly took the title away from his former friend and began a feud that spilled into the main roster spotlight. Owens eventually lost the title to Finn Balor but not after already debuting on the main roster answering John Cena’s United States Title Open Challenge. Owens didn’t accept the challenge, instead he power bombed Cena and went on to feud with the WWE’s top star of the past twelve years.
Two Intercontinental Championship reigns later Owens found himself in a fatal four way match against Seth Rollins, Big Cass and Roman Reigns to determine the second WWE Universal Champion after Finn’s injury. With a little help from a returning Triple H, Owens eliminated Rollins to win the title, Owens went nuts and so did the crowd as Raw ended with a ‘You deserve it’ chant; so what’s next for the champion of the universe?
Owens has dominated every promotion he has ever worked for beginning with Combat Zone Wrestling beginning in 2004. Owens went on to become the flagship leader of Ring of Honor while dominating opponents in PWG. Once arriving in the WWE Owens already had the approval of Triple H then Stone Cold Steve Austin took to the internet to proclaim Owens deserved to be the top guy. Now that he is there Owens is going to continue to do what he does best, talk trash then back it up; who’s going to stop him?
