Quick Hits: WWE Backlash

-Baron Corbin defeated Apollo Crews on the pre-show. I caught the last little bit of the match and it was pretty good. And most people I saw talking about the match enjoyed it as well. It’s a shame Apollo can’t catch a break. He needs something soon otherwise he will become a random mid-carder for life.

-Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan came out to hype the show. You have to kill some time somehow.

Six Pack Challenge For The Smackdown Women’s Championship: Becky Lynch vs Natalya vs Naomi vs Alexa Bliss vs Carmella vs Nikki Bella

-Alexa Bliss has a Harley Quinn look going for her. And let me tell you, it works. Really well.

-The ring clears early and we get a nice chain wrestling exchange between Becky and Naomi.

-Alexa hits some rough looking double knees to the gut of Nikki then does a handspring double knees.

-Nikki goes crazy on Carmella. But Carmella applies the Cone of Silence. Nikki pulls her best John Cena impression and lifts her into an Alabama Slam.

-We get the tower of doom spot with Natalya, Nikki and Carmella.

-Alexa Bliss has hit two Code Reds in this match. She’s been great.

-All five women end up outside so Namoi hits a springboard crossbody.

-Natalya goes for a running powerbomb but Alexa holds the ropes. Naomi goes to the top and hits a neckbreaker to Alexa as Natty brings her down. Alexa is pinned and eliminated. Booo.

***Alexa Bliss ELIMINATED***

-Naomi goes for a springboard but Nikki catches her with a forearm. Natalya applies the Sharpshooter and Naomi taps.

***Naomi ELIMINATED***

-Nikki hits a backbreaker eliminating Natalya. Carmella then rolls up Nikki to eliminate her.

***Natalya ELIMINATED***

***Nikki Bella ELIMINATED***

-Nikki slaps Carmella on the way out.

-Carmella hits a superkick on Becky. She does a little too much taunting and Becky applies the Disarmer. Carmella taps.

WINNER and NEW Smackdown Women’s Champion: Becky Lynch- I’m actually surprised they went through with Becky winning this early. I thought for sure Nikki Bella would win. I was even surprised Carmella eliminated Nikki. The match was good. Alexa Bliss was the standout to me early in the match. Solid opener with Becky getting the moment she deserves.

-Backstage, Bray Wyatt was attacking Randy Orton and slammed a door onto Orton’s leg.

The Usos vs The Hype Bros

-No pyro for the Usos. Hoodies and all black.

-Ryder goes for the Broski Boot but Uso gets pulled out of the ring. Ryder takes them both out on the outside with a missile dropkick. Then Mojo knocks them into the barricade with a double shoulder tackle.

-Jimmy Usos tosses Ryder into the post then Jey takes him out on the outside with a clothesline.

-The Usos work over Ryder for a long time.

-Ryder finally makes the hot tag to Mojo.

-Mojo gets taken out on the outside. Ryder tagged back in and hits a frankensteiner.

-Mojo runs into the barricade on the outside. Usos take out Ryder with the dropkick that injured Chad Gable. Jimmy applies the half crab and Ryder taps.

WINNERS: The Usos- OK match. Usos have the heel look and mannerisms down pretty well. Ryder worked 90% of the match. Even after the hot tag, Mojo barely did anything.

Intercontinental Championship: The Miz (c) vs Dolph Ziggler

-Miz tells Daniel Bryan backstage he wants to renogitate his contract. He then tells Bryan to go watch him do what Bryan can’t do anymore. Ouch.

-Dolph takes Miz down early with a single leg takedown.

-Miz grabs the upper hand.

-Miz knocks Ziggler to the outside then dropkicks him through the ropes.

-This match is way too much Miz dominating early. Ziggler misses a splash in the corner then applies the inverted surfboard.

-Miz is mocking Daniel Bryan. He hits his corner dropkicks. Then Miz hits his corner clothesline.

-Ziggler escapes a Skull Crushing Finale and finally gets a comeback going.

-Miz catches Dolph on a Fameasser attempt and hits a springboard sitout powerbomb.

-Ziggler finally catches Miz with the Fameasser.

-Miz lands some hard shots to Ziggler’s leg. Miz hits a DDT and applies the Figure Four but Dolph gets to the ropes.

-Dolph catches Miz with a superkick but Miz puts his foot on the rope.

-Both men exchange pin attempts. Maryse sprays Ziggler in the face with something. Miz hits the Skull Crushing Finale for the win.

WINNER and STILL Intercontinental Champion: The Miz- I get what they were trying to do with the Miz in the first part of the match. Miz pulled out most of Bryan’s move set. It went on a bit too long. The match picked up during the back and forth. I’m really curious what the payoff is for the Miz/Bryan angle.

-Bray Wyatt comes out. Randy Orton doesn’t because of his injury. Bray wins via the 10 count forfeit. But Bray has to fight Kane in a No Holds Barred Match.

No Holds Barred: Bray Wyatt vs Kane

-They go to the outside early. Kane stops a chairshot.

-Back in the ring Bray hits a crossbody. Bray rolls to the outside and hits Kane in the leg with a chair.

-Bray brings the chair into the ring and uses it.

-They roll to the outside and Bray catches Kane with a hard clothesline.

-Bray hits a running senton on Kane that sends him through the table.

-Bray goes for Sister Abigail. Kane hits a chokeslam instead for two.

-Bray hits his version of the chokeslam on the chair for two.

-Randy Orton comes out. He hits the RKO. Kane follows it with the chokeslam for the win.

WINNER: Kane- What the hell? Bray Wyatt can’t even beat Kane. I don’t get that. I would at least have let Bray get the win over Kane. Then have Orton come out after. Match was nothing.

Smackdown Tag Team Championship: The Usos vs Heath Slater and Rhyno

-Slater might be the most over guy on the show so far.

-The Usos suplex Slater into the post on the outside.

-Similar to The Usos previous match, they work over Slater.

-After a double crossbody Heath makes the hot tag to Rhyno.

-Rhyno misses a Gore. Slater tags himself in and hits neckbreakers.

-Slater walks right into a superkick. But Jimmy turns around into a Gore. Slater turns over and pins Jimmy for the win.

WINNERS and NEW Smackdown Tag Team Champions: Rhyno and Heath Slater- And there is the payoff the crowd has been waiting for. Slater put hard work into this storyline. And I doubt it was the plan going in. But Heath Slater got over in 2016. Match was average. It was more about the moment for Slater. I expect The Usos to win the Titles back soon.

WWE Championship: Dean Ambrose (c) vs AJ Styles

-Ambrose gives chase to Styles outside the ring but Styles beats him down.

-Styles drops Ambrose on the ropes.

-Ambrose escapes a chinlock but Styles catches him with a nice dropkick.

-Styles lands some knees in the corner. But AJ takes too long to taunt and Ambrose tosses him into the corner and lands some boots.

-But Ambrose misses a charge and runs into the post.

-Ambrose hits a belly-to-back superplex from the top that looked quite painful.

-Ambrose hits a rough backbreaker on Styles.

-Styles rolls to the outside. Ambrose catches him with an elbow off the top.

-Ambrose hits a sitout facebuster.

-Styles tries the Calf Crusher but Dean escapes. Styles blocks a suplex and hits one into the corner on Ambrose.

-Styles drops his weight right down onto the leg of Ambrose and starts working on it.

-Styles locks in the Calf Crusher but Ambrose gets to the ropes.

-Styles goes for a Styles Clash. Ambrose escapes. They go to the apron. Ambrose catapults Styles into the post. Fucking Ouch.

-Styles hits most of his signature spots ending in a Springboard 450 splash. But only two.

-Ambrose catches Styles with a swinging neckbreaker. He dropkicks Styles HARD to the outside then hits a suicide dive.

-Ambrose tosses Styles over the barricade and run the tables to hit a dive into the crowd.

-Back in the ring Styles hits a Pele Kick, but Amborse bounces off the ropes for a clothesline.

-Ambrose goes for Dirty Deeds but Styles backs him into the ref. Styles catches Ambrose with a low blow then hits the Styles Clash for the win!

WINNER and NEW WWE Champion: AJ Styles- In less than one year since joining the WWE, AJ Styles is the WWE Champion. Let that sink in for a minute. It goes to show you that the guy is one of the best in the world. Styles has busted his ass since day one in the WWE and his hard work finally paid off.

The match was very good. Styles took some hard bumps in the match. He went face first into the post and landed hard on his back on the outside. The crowd was more behind Styles. Ambrose looked his best in a match in awhile. These two really clicked in the ring. And I’m fine with the heel move Styles used to win the match. It wasn’t as bad as his first match with Cena.

OVERALL: I thought this was a good show. The WWE Title Match was very good. The Women’s match surprised me in quality. We got two feel good moments with Becky Lynch and Heath Slater winning Titles. Even the Miz match wasn’t bad, with Miz using most of Daniel Bryan’s offense. I don’t know if anyone cared for Bray against Kane. And Bray losing was dumb. But overall this show was a solid 6 out of 10.

Until Next Time,
