Quick Hits: WWE Royal Rumble 2017

Evening all. Justin C here with everything you need to know about the Royal Rumble!

Just got in front of a TV so here are some quick early results I missed:

In the opener on the pre-show, Naomi pinned Alexa Bliss in the 6 woman Smackdown tag. I guess they are going to go ahead and push Naomi into a feud with Alexa, which is fine with me.

Also, Gallows and Anderson FINALLY won the RAW Tag Titles from Cesaro and Sheamus. It is about damn time.

Sasha Banks vs Nia Jax

-Sasha does the traditional underdog move of charging at Nia to start the match. It of course fails miserably.

-Nia just keeps shutting down everything Sasha is doing. And she finally goes after Sasha’s injured knee.

-Not to be out done, Nia does the traditional giant spot and runs into the post after Sasha moves.

-Sasha gets a little offense in, but Nia comes right back with the pop-up Samoan Slam for the win.

WINNER: Nia Jax- Still not buying Nia Jax as a threat. She just doesn’t exucde scary monster like she should. It doesn’t help that her promos are bad too. Sasha did her best to make Nia look good.

-Stephanie says that Seth Rollins is banned from the Alamodome tonight. Must be taking after Donald Trump tonight.

RAW Women’s Championship: Charlotte (c) vs Bayley

-Charlotte looks like she broke into Billie Kay’s wardrobe for her robe tonight.

-The action goes to the outside early. Bayley gets her face slammed into the apron then pushed into the steps.

-Charlotte is dominating the action in the ring. She does the scissor wrap around the head and rolls around the ring slamming Bayley’s head into the mat.

-Bayley gets her comeback going and goes to the top and hits a Macho Man Elbow for two.

-Charlotte goes to the top, but Bayley gets her knees up just barely and scores a two.

-Both go to the top. Charlotte knocks Bayley off to the apron, then hits Natural Selection on the apron. Charlotte wins.

WINNER and STILL RAW Women’s Champion: Charlotte- Really surprised they went with the clean Charlotte win there. That kind of kills any momentum Bayley had going for her. I hope they build her back up going into Wrestlemania season. Solid match though.

No DQ Match for the WWE Universal Championship: Kevin Owens (c) vs Roman Reigns, Chris Jericho Locked In A Shark Cage

-Jericho refuses to go in the cage, so him and Owens attack Reigns. Why not, it’s No DQ!

-Reigns fights back and eventually shoves Jericho into the cage.

-The action spills to the outside and surprisingly no one in the crowd takes the opportunity to attack Reigns.

-Owens tosses Reigns into the barricade and cannon bombs into him.

-Owens builds a tower of chairs. But no one goes through it as the action spills back into the ring.

-A table gets set up on the outside. Owens hits a Bullfrog Splash from the top to the outside.

-Owens has a thing for steel chairs tonight. He slams a couple onto the back of Reigns.

-Owens catches Reigns with a superkick then throws him into a chair set up in the corner.

-Jericho tosses Owens some brass knuckles. Reigns blocks it at first, but Owens eventually hits a Superman Punch on Reigns but only gets two.

-Reigns blocks a powerbomb, then hits a Samoan Drop on Owens through a chair.

-Owens stops a Spear attempt then hits a Stone Cold Stunner for two. Austin is pissed he kicked out I bet.

-Both men go to the top. Reigns Superman punches Owens off through the chairs Owens set up earlier.

-Owens gets powerbombed through an announce table. He goes back into the ring for a Spear, but BRAUN pulls Reigns out of the ring. He chokeslams Reigns onto the table then slams him in the ring through a table. Owens then pins Reigns for the win.

WINNER and STILL WWE Universal Champion: Kevin Owens- That was a fun match. I was completely surprised by the BRAUN interference, didn’t see it coming. Owens took some scary bumps, especially the chair spot. Both men came out looking better at the end.

Cruiserweight Championship: Rich Swann (c) vs Neville

-Swann hits a dive to the outside, but Neville gets control back in the ring.

-Neville has been in control for what seems like forever, but Swann finally catches with a superkick off the ropes.

-Swann hurricarranas Neville off the top then hits a twisting 45o splash to the outside.

-Both men exchange some stiff kicks, followed by superkicks.

-Neville hits a Superplex off the top then applies his submission for the win.

WINNER and NEW Cruiserweight Champion: Neville- Why can’t all Cruiswerweight matches be like this? I wish they let all matches happen like that. Neville gets to rule the Cruiserweight division now.

WWE Championship: AJ Styles (c) vs John Cena

-Slow action to start, which makes me think these two are going pretty long.

-Cena obviously misses an early AA, and AJ lands on his feet and hits an enziguri kick.

-Styles blocks a Five Knuckle Shuffle then connects on a German Suplex and a faceplant for two.

-Styles escapes from the top and gets Cena into a Torture Rack position, then drops him.

-Styles misses a Forearm and Cena hits an AA but obviously only gets two.

-After Cena misses a clothesline, Styles hits a Pele Kick then a Phenomenal Forearm for two.

-Punches and kicks are exchanged. Styles counters an AA into a Calf Crusher. Styles has it locked in for a but but Cena applies the STF. Styles escapes and applies an even better version of Cena’s STF!

-Cena goes for another AA, but Styles counters, but Cena stops a hurricarrana attempt and applies a Figure Four!

-Styles applies a cross armbreaker, but Cena deadlifts him up and breaks the hold.

-Cena goes to the top, but Styles moves. He hits a Styles Clash but only gets two.

-Cena gets his knees up on a 450 splash then connects on a PICTURE PERFECT CODE RED for two.

-They go to the top. Super AA from Cena. STYLES KICKS OUT!

-Styles comes back an hits a Styles Clash. He goes for the Phenomenal Forearm, but Cena grabs him and hits the AA. He then rolls through and hits another AA for the win.

WINNER and NEW WWE Champion: John Cena- Another great match between these two I think I like the SummerSlam match better, and not because Styles won that match. Cena pretty much killed Styles at the end with three finishers. Styles looked great in defeat. No problem with Cena having the Title again. It’s been so long, and he’s been great over the last year.

Royal Rumble Match

-Big Cass is #1, and they get to do their long entrance and talk for about five minutes. Chris Jericho is #2.

-Kalisto comes out at #3, to pretty much no reaction.

-Mojo is out at #4 and this thing just got HYPED!!!

-Jack Gallagher is out at #5. SOMEONE CHANGE THE ROPES!!!

-Gallagher low blows Jericho with his umbrella, then opens it up and twirls it around.

-Mark Henry is #6 and looks blown up by the time he gets to the ring.

-Gallagher comes off the top with his umbrella but Henry catches him an eliminates him.

-BRAUN IS OUT AT #7. He clears out Mojo and Big Cass then tosses Kalisto over the ropes onto them. BRAUN then eliminates Mark Henry.

-Sami Zayn is #8 as Chris Jericho hides outside the ring.

-Abs Show comes out at #9. BRAUN and Show battle a bit. BRAUN eventually eliminates Big Show.

-It’s #10, and its TYE DILLINGER. Him and Zayn double team Strowman. James Ellsworth is #11 but doesn’t want to get in the ring.

-Dean Ambrose is #12. He pretends like he is going to go in the ring with Ellsworth, but Ambrose lets Ellsworth go in alone and get eliminated.

-Baron Corbin is in at #13. Zayn hits a Helluva Kick on BRAUN, then Corbin ELIMINATES BRAUN. NOOOOOO!!!!

-Kofi is #14 and Miz is #15. Corbin knocks Kofi onto the post but he hangs on as Sheamus comes in at #16.

-Big E comes in at #17 and slaps Miz in the butt. Rusev is #18, Cesaro 19 and Xaiver 20 as the ring starts to fill up.

-Bray Wyatt comes in at #21 and the ring starts to fill up. Now Apollo Crews comes in at #22 and the ring is really filling up.

-Cesaro and Sheamus eliminate ALL of the New Day. Sheamus tries to eliminate Cesaro but Jericho comes from behind and eliminates them both.

-Randy Orton is #23 and he delivers RKO to everyone.

-Dolph Ziggler is in at #24 so this time it is superkicks for everyone.

-Luke Harper is #25 to no reaction. But he does eliminate Apollo Crews. Bray tries to play peacekeeper but goes after Bray and Orton. Harper tries a Sister Abigail on Bray, but Orton hits the RKO.

-Brock is #26. He tosses Ambrose and Ziggler. Then he delivers suplexes and F5s to everyone.

-Enzo Amore is #27. He hypes himself up to face Brock but quickly gets eliminated.

-Goldberg is #28. He comes in and immediately spears Brock then clotheslines him over the top.

-Undertaker is #29, and he magically appears in the ring so he doesn’t have to walk the ramp.

-Goldberg eliminates Rusev as Corbin is eliminated by Undertaker. Goldberg dumps Luke Harper then Undertaker comes from behind and dumps Goldberg!

-Roman Reigns is #30 AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Him and Taker exchange blows.

-Taker dumps Miz and Sami Zayn. Reigns comes from behind and dumps Taker.

-Reigns superman punches Jericho off the top and eliminates him.

-Reigns hits Superman punches on Orton and Bray then eliminates Bray. Reigns goes for a Spear on Orton but Orton his the RKO then eliminates Reigns.

WINNER: Randy Orton- Well, the rumors are true. I’m very meh on Orton winning. I just don’t care about him enough to get behind him winning the Rumble. And it pretty much telegraphs Bray winning. The Rumble was fun until the final 25 when things became telegraphed.

OVERALL: The show was good. But the Rumble match again left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Cena/Styles was great. The Universal Title match was fun. Not a bad show, but it left you wanting something else.

Until Next Time,

Justin C
