JC’s Top Rope Report: Changing The Rumored Wrestlemania Card

JC Top Rope Logo 2

It’s Wrestlemania season. And that of course means one thing: It is time for wrestling fans to complain about the Wrestlemania card!

This has become a yearly tradition with wrestling fans. Every year we look forward to Wrestlemania. But then when the Royal Rumble is over, we sit here complaining about what the WWE could have done better. Sometimes you have to wonder how the WWE can screw this up year after year.

So here is what the rumored Wrestlemania card looks like. This obviously contains SPOILERS, so if you don’t want to be spoiled I would suggest to stop reading here.

WWE Universal Championship
Goldberg (c) vs. Brock Lesnar

WWE Championship
Bray Wyatt (c) vs. Randy Orton

RAW Women’s Championship
Charlotte (c) vs. Bayley vs. Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax

Roman Reigns vs. The Undertaker

Seth Rollins vs. Triple H

Kevin Owens vs. Chris Jericho

AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon

John Cena & Nikki Bella vs. The Miz & Maryse

The Big Show vs. Shaquille O’Neal

To me, that is just so much wasted potential. The WWE roster may be the best that it has ever been, And you are going to waste John Cena in a mixed tag match? Hell, I would even say that about The Miz right now too. And making Goldberg/Brock Lesnar for the Universal Title is about the dumbest thing you could do. Goldberg should not be Champ. Hell, if it were up to me I would separate Lesnar and Goldberg at Mania. I don’t trust them to put together a competent five minute match. And if the main event of Wrestlemania is that short I would go ahead and call it a rip off.

You can mix and match some of those pieces to make things fit better. And you can put together a much better Wrestlemania card if you do that. I wrote a few weeks ago that if you are going to use part timers at a constant rate, you need to start using them to put over younger talent. The WWE wonders why their current crop of talent never gets over. It’s because the WWE pushes Goldberg and Brock Lesnar as the real stars come Wrestlemania season. So why should they care about anything that happens between the day after Wrestlemania to the Royal Rumble?

So, how would I redo this year’s Wrestlemania? Let me give you my answer. This is me taking over the booking the day before the Royal Rumble:

Seth Rollins vs Triple H

-No reason to not stick with this match. Of course, I’m getting the book the day before the Rumble, so I’m assuming Seth Rollins isn’t injured. Everything about this feud from NXT to RAW the night after the Rumble was great outside of Seth getting injured.

Shaq vs Big Show

-Harmless match to put on the card. It’s fine with me.

Randy Orton vs Bray Wyatt

-This is a match I had zero issue with. I just didn’t want it taking place for a Title. The story told itself with the Orton/Bray split coming. I would’ve had Orton eliminate Bray at some point during the Rumble. Then you could have Bray eliminate Orton inside the Elimination Chamber. And your match is set.

BRAUN Strowman vs Goldberg, Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar

-I just don’t want to see Goldberg against Brock Lesnar again, especially at Wrestlemania. So I blow it off at Fastlane. Lesnar goes over in a short match. The next night on RAW, Goldberg comes out and gives a speech that makes you think his time is up in the WWE. Then BRAUN comes out to challenge him and attacks Goldberg. Lays him out. BRAUN puts Goldberg through the barricade then the announce table. Goldberg is gone for a couple weeks, then returns and spears BRAUN and delivers a Jackhammer, setting up their Mania match. This is a match you could get away with being 5 minutes or less. You can’t do that with a Goldberg/Lesnar main event.

As far as Lesnar/Reigns goes, that one is simple as well. Brock comes out the week after Fastlane. He brags about finally beating Goldberg. Reigns comes out and says they have unfinished business. They never found out who was the better man at WM31. And there’s your match.

Universal Title: Kevin Owens (c) vs Chris Jericho vs Finn Balor

-The Owens/Jericho split is coming sooner rather than later. And Finn Balor should be medically cleared by March. Balor never lost the Title, so he has a rightful claim to fight for it. Add the storyline breakup that will be Owens/Jericho to this and your story is set.

Samoa Joe vs Shane McMahon

-Hear me out on this one. You want Joe to debut and look like a badass. What better way to do it then to have Joe throw Shane around the ring at Wrestlemania? Have Joe debut on Smackdown and wreak havoc for a couple of weeks. Shane tries to tell Joe he needs to take it down a notch. Joe has none of it. It’s a better use of Shane then a potential AJ Styles match.

WWE Championship: AJ Styles (c) vs The Miz

-I’d have Styles retain the Title at the Rumble, then have Miz win the Rumble. Why? Because Miz has been the best character on TV in the last few months. His career rejuvination has shocked me. If you would have told me that Miz could fight for the WWE Title at Wrestlemania 6 months ago and I’d be okay with it, I would have laughed at you. I couldn’t have booked a storyline that would have worked. Now it makes sense. The Wrestlemania crowd is going to cheer Styles anyways, so just put him against the Miz. You don’t even need to change anything about Styles at all.

John Cena vs The Undertaker

-Yeah I just gave a speech about part timers putting over younger guys. But this is the one big dream match we never got, and I want to see it. Undertaker is in rough shape, and he should probably retire after this year’s Mania. Get this match out of the way, and let Mania end with the crowd applauding Taker as he walks to the back.

I’m fine with the RAW Women’s Fatal 4 Way. Obviously I’d do something with the Smackdown women as well. Give the Revival and American Alpha 15 minutes on the preshow and make a Fatal 4 Way for the RAW Tag Titles. And I’d probably put Corbin/Ambrose for the IC Title somewhere as well.

What do you think? Do you like this Wrestlemania card better than the rumored WWE one?
