Quick Hits: WWE Wrestlemania 33 w/Justin C

Neville defeated Austin Aries to retain the Cruiserweight Title

-This seems like what happened with AJ Styles last year: A TNA guy makes his Wrestlemania debut and loses when it seems like they should have won. On my first watch of the show this may have been the match of the night. I thought Aries was seriously hurt when Neville German suplexed him and Aries landed on his head. It also helped that the match was on the pre-show, because it gave these two more time.

Mojo Rawley Won The Andre The Giant Battle Royal

-WHO’S FUCKING HYPED??? (Not me because I’m writing this at 1 am) Look, this is just a meaningless battle royal that unfortunately has Andre the Giant’s name attached to it. Mojo won’t get a big push from this. The WWE will get some extra time on SportsCenter with Gronk appearing at the end. It was quite funny seeing the female security guard trying to stop Gronk initially.

Dean Ambrose defeated Baron Corbin to retain the Intercontinental Championship

-Weird that this was switched to the pre-show. Just an okay match. Thought for sure Corbin was winning. It is a sad drop for Ambrose, who went from fighting Brock Lesnar last year to fighting on the pre-show.

AJ Styles defeated Shane McMahon

-If you need any more proof that AJ Styles can get a good match out of anyone, look no further. Some points were laughable with Shane’s weak punches and submissions. But Styles bumped his ass off for Shane to try and make him look good. But if I don’t see another Shane McMahon match I will be happy. He hit the Coast-to-Coast which was nice. I just wish Shane didn’t kick out of the Styles Clash.

Kevin Owens defeated Chris Jericho to win the United States Championship

-A close second for the match of the night. Just a good solid wrestling match. I felt more hatred between these two then I did between Triple H and Seth Rollins (More on that later.) If these two are at the end of the show fighting for the Universal Title maybe the crowd isn’t so dead for it.

Bayley defeated Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Nia Jax to retain the RAW Women’s Championship

-These women are capable of better. But I’ll say one thing: Charlotte came out of this looking like the star of the women’s division. That corkscrew moonsault was great. From an overall package, she is the best women on the roster. And she may be the most talented the WWE has seen in a long damn time. I said only Trish was better then her in recent memory. I think Charlotte has passed her. This should have been Bayley’s big moment winning the Title, but instead it felt like a meaningless match with a couple fun spots. RAW’s women division needs new life, and hopefully we get that in the coming weeks.

THE HARDY BOYZ defeated The Club, Sheamus and Cesaro and Enzo and Cass to win the RAW Tag Team Championship

-DELIGHTFUL. Well, it wasn’t full on Broken Matt Hardy. But it was still a great Wrestlemania moment that will be talked about for years to come. Great tease by the New Day as well. I’ll be interested to see what happens with the Hardyz going forward. I mean, Matt has to have some of the broken characteristics still right? It is the only way Matt really works for me. It helped rejuvenate his career. Being on RAW is also the right move. At least their tag team division isn’t treated like a joke. And of course, Jeff had to die for our sins in his first match back.

John Cena and Nikki Bella defeated Miz and Maryse

-Short and fine. The build pretty much called for it, with Miz and Maryse ripping on Cena and Nikki at every turn. Even John Cena could see the proposal coming. It was fine. You could tell Nikki seemed like she knew it was coming too. Maybe the actual proposal took place already? It was still no Macho Man and Elizabeth at Wrestlemania 7 though. Miz can recover from this. If there is one thing he is good at, it is getting his heat back.

Seth Rollins defeated Triple H

-Here is where the show started to go down hill. Triple H’s entrance took way too long. Not only that, the match took way too long too. And it in no way felt like an unsanctioned match. With the video package and the way they built this feud up, I expected an all out war. But it came nowhere close to it. Steph took her obligatory bump at Wrestlemania, but she will be back to belittling people in no time. The right man won, but it just went on for way too long. It should’ve been a 10-12 minute brawl. And Seth should have brought back the curb stomp here.

Randy Orton defeated Bray Wyatt to win the WWE Championship

-You are going to want to listen to the HTCWrestling Podcast this week. I’ll save my rant for there. But with the projector shit in the ring combined with the actual wrestling, this was the WORST WWE TITLE MATCH IN WRESTLEMANIA HISTORY. It also completely killed any liking I had left for the Bray Wyatt character.

Brock Lesnar defeated Goldberg to win the WWE Universal Title

-This match used all of five moves: Spear, Jackhammer, German suplex, F-5 and a Brock Lesnar leapfrog. It was what it was. Both men looked gassed a minute in. At least it seemed hard hitting. I just don’t want a year long Brock Lesnar Title reign, especially if it is leading to a Roman Reigns win again.

Naomi won the Smackdown Women’s Title in a Six Pack Challenge

-Another short match but the action was quick and well-paced. Pretty much saw this coming when Naomi returned.

Roman Reigns defeated The Undertaker

-The match was bad. It was quite obvious that Taker just had nothing left in the tank at all. There were a couple botched spots. And this ending did NOTHING for Roman Reigns. The fans will continue to boo him. And if he is already a heel like Triple H says, why do they lower the crowd mic whenever he comes out? Roman Reigns continues to be an abject failure for the WWE. It was now or never for a heel turn, and it didn’t happen. I thought it might come when they announced it as No Holds Barred. But nothing. Undertaker’s send-off was fine. I just wish it came a year or two earlier. Taker was in rough shape.

OVERALL: The show was exceeding expectations until the HHH/Rollins match. After that it took a turn for the worse. That match went on too long, the WWE Title match sucked money balls, and the other two big matches didn’t deliver. Also, why the hell bring up Samoa Joe in February and not have him appear during the HHH/Rollins match. Unlike Wrestlemania 31 which exceeded all expectations, this one only did that for the first half of the show. The Hardyz returning was great. Overall I would call this a middle of the road Wrestlemania. Definitely better than 32, but nowhere near 30 or 31. And if you include the pre-show this was over SEVEN FUCKING HOURS!!! Any crowd is going to die after that long of a show. The WWE really needs to reconsider the “get everyone on Wrestlemania” mentality.

I’d give the show a 6 out of 10.

Until Next Time,

Justin C
