It is my favorite guessing game to play every year! Last year, I correctly guessed Seth Rollins vs Triple H but that is only because it was suppose to happen at WM32 and didn’t.
So what can I correctly guess this year? My hope is that I can nail down two matches correctly this far out.
The first thing I’m doing is making sure this damn show doesn’t go over 7 hours again. The preshow can be two hours, but I’m making sure everyone knows the first hour is a general preview show and the second hour will contain the two matches on the pre-show.
Andre the Giant Jobber Battle Royal
-You want to get everyone on the card? Fine. I guess you can still do that here. Poor Andre the Giant has to be rolling over in his grave every time he sees the participants listed in the battle royal.
Bray Wyatt and BRAUN Strowman vs BROKEN Matt Hardy and Brother Nero
-This is how you get Bray and BRAUN on the card and also have them in a big match. It sounds like the Broken gimmick will make its way into the WWE sooner rather than later. I don’t know if BRAUN or Bray ever get a big singles match at Mania. And if it is Bray you know it will just be a match he loses anyways. People want to see Broken Matt and Bray feud anyways, so why not just make it a tag team affair.
Kurt Angle vs Kevin Owens
-In my world, this happens because of a swap made later in the year with Owens and the wrestler listed in the next match. I think Angle wrestles at Wrestlemania next year. If there is someone that works as an opponent for Angle and get play the heel role well against him, it would be KO. Although the thought of Angle potentially taking a pop-up powerbomb scares me a bit.
Randy Orton vs Samoa Joe
-Here is the wrestler that ends up getting traded to Smackdown in exchange for KO. You could have done Joe vs Angle, but we have seen that before in TNA. I had this match penciled in last year when I did this column for WM33. Joe vs Orton would be a good match-up.
Finn Balor vs Dean Amborse
-If there is anyone other than Roman Reigns who is in desperate need for a heel turn, it is Dean Ambrose. This match could be for the IC Title but I didn’t want to add Titles to matches outside of the two main ones. You could even make this a blood feud if you want. Have Ambrose get jealous of the crowd liking Balor and then snap. I contemplated putting Balor in the Universal Title match, but I don’t think the WWE puts Balor in a Mania main event.
John Cena vs Roman Reigns
-Wrestling fans may not want to admit it, but this is a big money draw match for the WWE. And I think there are a good amount of wrestling fans who have grown to respect Cena more than they ever had before. Cena is pretty much a part timer at this point, but you know he will always be back for Wrestlemania. If beating The Undertaker this year didn’t officially coronate Reigns as the guy, beating John Cena at Wrestlemania would. I know the current plan is to do Reigns/Lesnar for the Universal Title, but the WWE can’t seriously be considering A-Keeping the Universal Title on Lesnar for a year and B-Putting Reigns in a fourth straight Mania main event.
WWE Title: AJ Styles (c) vs Shinsuke Nakamura
-This won’t close the show. That’s mostly because I have a hard time believing Vince McMahon will put two non-WWE creations in the main event of the biggest show of the year. I don’t agree with it. But this is how Vince operates. The real question will be if these two can top their Wrestle Kingdom 10 match from 2016. You don’t even need a face or heel going into this match. Just make it all about the wrestling. Can the WWE hold off on putting Nakamura in the WWE Title scene this long? Probably not. But that doesn’t mean he has to win his first WWE Title match.
WWE Universal Championship: Brock Lesnar (c) vs Seth Rollins
-I get the idea that this whole year will be the “redemption” of Seth Rollins. The tough part will be keeping Rollins out of the Universal Title picture until Wrestlemania. I also don’t think Brock will hold on to the Title for the full year. I could see him losing to Reigns at SummerSlam then regaining the Title at the Royal Rumble. If the WWE can get Rollins right from a babyface perspective and not turn him into the typical cookie cutter face, then it can work. Rollins can be built up as the top face of the RAW brand. As for Lesnar, WM34 is the reported end of his current deal. So this could be Lesnar’s last match.
I know I didn’t include any women’s or tag team matches but I’m trying to include the big matches on the show at this point only. And quite frankly, unless they bring up Asuka, I don’t know what big time matches the WWE can do in the women’s division.
