Quick Hits: WWE Backlash 2017

Aiden English vs Tye Dillinger

-English sings his way to the ring and trashes Chicago. Dillinger interrupts his encore.

-English gets control by pulling Dillinger’s arm into the ropes.

-Dillinger connects on an atomic drop and gets a comeback going.

-English moves out of the way of a splash and gets a two. He starts to have a “breakdown” but controls himself.

-English misses a swanton off the top and Dillinger hits the Tye Breaker for the win.

Dolph Ziggler vs Shinsuke Nakamura

-Dolph lands a quick cheap shot early and tries to take things to the mat but Nakamura escapes.

-Nakamura tells Dolph to bring it and lands a knee to the gut and then a knee drop.

-The action spills to the outside. Dolph catches Nakamura coming back in with a neckbreaker.

-Ziggler taunts Nakamura and there is a brief “Lets Go Ziggler/Ziggler Sucks” chant. People cheering for Dolph should be drug tested.

-Nakamura hits a knee to the gut. Dolph ducks a front kick but Nakamura hits a back kick.

-Nakamura goes for a front suplex but Dolph counters into a DDT.

-Dolph hits a Fameasser but Nak kicks out at two.

-Dolph tunes up for a Super Kick but Nakamura moves. But Ziggler comes back with a ZigZag for two.

-Nakamura goes for a reverse exploder suplex but Dolph lands on his feet and hits a superkick to the back of the head. Only two again though.

-Dolph spits in the face of Nakamura. Nakamura gets mad and goes to town with knees on various parts of the body including one with Dolph in the ropes.

-Nakamura hits the reverse exploder suplex then hits a Kinsasha for the win.

WINNER: Shinsuke Nakamura- Dolph got way too much offense in and I think Nakamura didn’t display all of his offensive arsenal. Match was fine but it never seemed to get into another gear. And part of that is because whoever booked the match gave Dolph way too much offense.

Smackdown Live Tag Team Titles: The Usos (c) vs The Fashion Police

-Tyler Breeze is dressed as a janitor. Maybe if he gets pinned they can claim it wasn’t really him.

-Breeze gets tagged in and continues to mop. He turns his back in the corner but moves so Uso misses a dive then gets tripped with the mop. Jey gets tagged in and takes out Tyler then destroys the mop.

-Jey tries hitting a dive but Breeze keeps rolling to the opposite corner. It eventually ends with Breeze hitting an enziguri.

-Breeze gets knocked off the apron but comes back dressed as an old lady. He ends up catching the Usos with spin kicks until the Usos take Tyler out with a superkick.

-Breeze moves out of the way of a splash and makes the hot tag to Fandango who goes to work.

-Usos hit a nice backbreaker then an axe handle off the top for two.

-One Usos accidentally superkicks the other and Breeze hits the Unprettier for a good near fall,

-Breeze goes for a swanton off the apron but the Usos catch him and toss him into the barricade. Fandango hits a swanton over the ropes though.

-Fandango goes to the top but Jimmy grabs his leg. Jey hits a superkick for the win.

WINNERS and STILL Smackdown Live Tag Champs: The Usos- If you aren’t in to over the top corny stuff then this match isn’t for you. I thought Breeze made everything work because his tactics were getting to the Usos. A couple of good nearfalls for the Fashion Police at the end and I thought Fandango looked great in the match.

Sami Zayn vs Baron Corbin

-Corbin overpowers Zayn at pretty much everything he tries to do early on.

-Zayn ducks a Corbin charge. Zayn goes to the top but Corbin moves and hits a spinebuster as Corbin continues to go after Zayn’s back.

-Corbin continues to shut down all of Zayn’s offense.

-Sami hits a sunset powerbomb but can’t hit the Exploder suplex in the corner. Sami does get a two count but Corbin comes right back with the Deep Six.

-Zayn again ducks a Corbin charge and he goes to the outside. Zayn catches Corbin with a boot then hits the Helluva Kick for the win.

WINNER: Sami Zayn- Well that was quite the surprise. Corbin dominated the entire match but Zayn gets the win. I was fully expecting a post match attack by Corbin to get some heat back afterwards but it didn’t happen.

The Welcoming Committee vs Naomi, Charlotte and Becky Lynch

-James Ellsworth comes out to get heat for the heel women’s team. The best role for him easily.

-Charlotte and Becky beat up Natalya early on. Carmelal distracts Charlotte, however, and Natalya clotheslines her on the apron.

-Charlotte makes a quick hot tag to Naomi and she goes to work. But this time Tamina distracts Naomi and Carmella kicks her a couple times in the back of the head.

-Naomi tries to make the tag to Becky but Carmella pulls Becky off the apron.

-Naomi finally hurricarranas Natalya then makes the tag to Becky.

-Becky applies the Disarmer but Carmella breaks it up. Charlotte tosses Carmella but Tamina comes in and superkicks Charlotte then headbutts Naomi.

-Tamina comes in but Becky takes her out. But the distraction allows Natalya to apply the Sharpshooter for the win.

WINNERS: The Welcoming Committee- My guess is that this teases tension between the face team in the next couple weeks. I still think someone turns in that group at some point. Action was okay.

United States Championship: Kevin Owens (c) vs AJ Styles

-The announcers keep bringing up the right leg which KO hit with the belt on Smackdown and KO keeps going after it.

-KO pulls Styles off the ropes and hits a clothesline. He then goes right back to the right leg.

-Styles comes back with a barrage of punches and kicks then a seated forearm. Styles then drops Owens face first onto the mat.

-KO ducks a springboard and hits a neckbreaker onto the knee.

-Some people try a CM Punk chant but it gets booed down.

-Styles teases a Styles Clash off the apron. But KO tosses Styles into the steps knee first then hits he cannonball. KO then cannonballs into Styles knee in the ring.

-KO lifts Styles on the top. Styles counters into a powerbomb.

-Styles hits a Pele Kick. This time they go to the top and KO hits a firemen’s carry drop off the second rope.

-Both men go to the apron. Styles blocks a suplex then suplexes KO literally right on the edge of the apron. Fucking ouch.

-KO tosses Styles into the timekeeper area. Styles comes right back with a Phenomenal Forearm.

-They get on top of the announce table. KO gets Styles caught in one of the monitor holes in the table and Styles gets wrapped around some cords. KO gets back in the ring and wins via countout. KO comes back and kicks Styles after.

WINNER via Countout and STILL United States Champion: Kevin Owens- Very good match. And I don’t have a problem with the ending. It protects Styles and likely means this feud continues into Money in the Bank. With Money in the Bank being a Smackdown exclusive show, you need some time to fill. I could see a 2 out of 3 falls match in the future for these two.

Luke Harper vs Erick Rowan

-Well at least Harper has a match on PPV right?

-Rowan tosses Harper to the outside then dropkicks him off the apron.

-Rowan has been on offense the whole time and the crowd could not care less.

-Harper finally gets Rowan on the outside and hits his trademark dive.

-Rowan hits an elbow then his spinning heel kick and weak powerbomb for two.

-They exchange punches. Harper hits a couple superkicks as Rowan talks to his mask. Harper comes back with a discus punch for the win.

WINNER: Luke Harper- Can we please get Luke Harper a real push now?

WWE Championship: Randy Orton (c) vs Jinder Mahal

-Orton attacks Jinder before the match. He throws him over the announce table and adds a few more blows before throwing Jinder back into the ring.

-They regroup in the ring and Jinder JINDERS UP. But Orton still has total control once the bell sounds.

-Jinder throws Orton into the LED ring board and goes to work on the arm.

-Orton tosses Jinder to the outside then drops him on the announce table. Jinder catches Orton coming back in the ring with some kicks to regain control.

-Orton side steps Jinder and tosses him into the post. Jinder had the same damn armbar applied for what felt like a half an hour before that.

-Jinder is able to go back to the arm but Orton is able to get Jinder in position for the middle rope DDT.

-Jinder bails to the outside. Orton takes out the Singh Brothers. Jinder slams Orton’s arm into the post a few times. Jinder throws Orton back into the ring but Orton hits the RKO. The Singh Brothers pull Jinder out of the ring.

-Orton destroys the Singh Brothers. He drops them hard on the announce tables then double DDTs. BUT JINDER COMES IN AND HITS THE COBRA CLUTCH SLAM FOR THE WIN!!!

WINNER AND NEW WWE CHAMPION: Jinder Mahal- JINDER IS NO LONGER HINDERED! The match itself wasn’t bad if you take away the long Jinder rest holds. Unhinged Orton kind of tipped off where the ending was going, at least for me. This will be completely about the follow up. How will Jinder be treated as Champion? At one point I thought Orton actually injured his shoulder because he was talking to the ref about it. And where does this leave Rusev going forward?

OVERALL: The show was better than Payback. Styles/KO was good. The tag match was fun. Nakamura’s debut felt a little dull. And the main event will have people talking. I’d give the show a solid 6.

Until Next Time,
