JC’s Top Rope Report: Is Jinder Mahal The Worst WWE Champion Of All Time?
It started as a joke. Jinder Mahal can’t really win the WWE Title can he?
Then it happened, and we decided to give it a shot. Could it really be that bad?
And here we are, almost six months into the WWE Title reign of Jinder Mahal, begging for it to end and wishing we could all take back our jokes about Jinder winning in the first place.
Watching Jinder Mahal on Smackdown Live every week is becoming more and more painful. I seriously cannot think of one good segment that he had when he was WWE Champion. I racked my brain while writing this article trying to think of one and I could not. Everything about Jinder Mahal is bad. And guess what? His promos and matches are the SAME DAMN THING ALL THE TIME.
Let me give you a brief summary of a Jinder Mahal promo: You people disrespect me, you do not treat me like the true modern day maharaja that I am, I will now speak to my native people in Punjabi.
Sounds about right doesn’t it?
Oh and how about his matches? Face starts off hot, Jinder slows it down with boring rest holds and nothing else, face starts a comeback, Singh Brothers interfere, Jinder wins.
Nothing. Ever. Changes.
But yet for some reason we are at the mercy of Jinder every week. You want to know how a WWE Champion is bad? When he isn’t on the show and barely mentioned at all. It was the Smackdown Live after Hell In A Cell and Jinder was never mentioned on the show. When the person holding the most prestigious Title in your company isn’t mentioned the show after the PPV, you know he’s bad.
Jinder Mahal continues to reign as WWE Champion on Smackdown Live because Vince McMahon has this delusional idea. He thinks that Jinder Mahal will get every single one of the 1.3 billion people in India to watch the WWE and bring in a boat load of money to the company. Problem is, that is never going to happen. Hell, they would be lucky to get 500,000 of those people to watch the WWE. And it isn’t a market that is going to help your overall bottom line on a consistent basis. Meanwhile, you have declining attendance state side. We see pictures every week of the arena Smackdown is at with all of one side tarped off. The WWE won’t say it but you know that Jinder Mahal being WWE Champion has something to do with it. Imagine if Rusev would have gotten this push like originally intended? Rusev has been great on Smackdown over the last month. He’s entertaining and shows a ton of charisma and natural ability in the ring. Jinder Mahal has none of that.
Even if you really wanted to push Jinder Mahal as WWE Champion, there was a right and wrong way to do it. The WWE went about it the wrong way and went directly to the end of the book. They skipped every chapter leading up to it. They made him #1 Contender then gave him the Title. The guy was a jobber his entire WWE run. You can’t just expect people to believe him as WWE Champion all of a sudden. What they should have done is given Jinder the United States Title first and let him have a run with that. And you know what? His whole Punjabi schtick would probably get over more. It is still your typical anti-America evil foreigner gimmick but at least the Title he would have held made sense.
If you examine the list of WWE Champions over the years, it is tough to find someone as bad as Jinder Mahal. The only person you could even make an argument for would be Vince McMahon. But at least Vince’s reign was short and inoffensive. Jinder Mahal is out here every week boring us to death with the exact same thing. The key to a good performer is that they change up their act every once in awhile. I mean sure, Jinder changed from being a member of 3MB to what he is now. But he actually got worst. I guess you could also say that he changed his look. But I still have a hard time believing that he did that “naturally.”
The sad part about this story is that we are more than likely getting Jinder Mahal as WWE Champion all the way to Wrestlemania. Jinder has already went through Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura. We now have to sit through a Brock Lesnar vs Jinder Mahal match at Survivor Series. That’s an absolute joke and a waste of Brock Lesnar’s limited dates. John Cena is rumored to be the special guest referee. They apparently want Jinder to get the rub of being in the ring with all of these big names. That doesn’t mean shit to me if he continues to bore me every week. And this likely sets up a John Cena vs Jinder Mahal match at Wrestlemania. That’s right, the next Wrestlemania is likely to end with Roman Reigns and John Cena as Champions.
Nothing positive has come out of Jinder Mahal’s WWE Title reign. Not one thing. He ruined Nakamura’s chance at being a big time star. He’s about to beat AJ Styles in a match in the near future. Can you imagine if he beats Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series? That would be the icing on the cake of this joke of a Title reign. In New Japan Pro Wrestling, they show a montage of photos of all the past IWGP Heavyweight Champions. If the WWE did that, it would now have to include Jinder Mahal. This WWE Title reign will be looked back upon as a complete waste of time with nothing positive ever coming out of it. There is nothing that the WWE could do to make it better. Unfortunately, the only thing they can do is continue to make it worse.
