NJPW G1 Climax B Block Day One Review 7.15.18 w/ The Chairman

The B Block is underway for New Japan Pro Wrestling G1 Climax 28. I will only be covering the matches for the G1 Climax itself, none of the exhibition tag matches during the first portion of the show. Anyways here are some moments from night one of B Block action.

B Block Match One: Tomohiro Ishii vs Toru Yano

Chaos teammates are starting off the action for the B Block. Ishii and Yano have tagged up many times and they are polar opposites when it comes to wrestling. Ishii is stone cold serious and uses his power to take control of matches while Yano tries underhanded tactics and comedy. Yano of course starts the match hiding between the ropes to frustrate Ishii. The one thing that was unique about this match was Yano actually tried to legit wrestle or a change. Usually he’s more focused on his bizarre mannerisms, but he went right after Ishii at times. Yano tried to low blow Ishii at one point, but the referee caught him. One point Ishii had Yano setup for the brainbuster, but Yano managed to grab the ref and the ref got thrown around. The ironic part of all though is that Ishii was the one that landed a low blow on Yano followed by a cradle pin to steal the match.

WINNER: Tomohiro Ishii

B Block Match Two: Tama Tonga vs Juice Robinson

Last year Tama Tonga defeated Juice Robinson in the G1, will history repeat itself? These two definitely didn’t hold back on the trash talk as that went on all match. Juice still had a cast on his left hand and it was brought up several times that if Juice used the cast that he would be disqualified. Tanga Loa accompanied Tama Tonga to ringside and played a major factor in the match. They brawled on the outside and Tama almost shattered Juice’s hand with the gate had he not escaped in time. Tama wanted to continue brawling on the outside and kept taunting Juice to come out and play with him. Juice of course wanted to keep the action in the ring. Tama showed his mean streak in this match between a big splash in the corner followed by the Tonga Twist. Tama than put all his weight on the hand of Juice Robinson by standing on it as long as he could. Juice later got momentum back and started his sequence of punches, but remembered he couldn’t go for the big left since he had his cast on. Juice and Tama were battling as Juice tried several times to hit an electric chair drop. On the third time Juice finally nailed it, but Tama somehow kicked out. Juice then was primed for Pulp Friction, but this is when Tanga Loa paid dividends and got on the apron. Juice hip tossed Tanga in the ring and clocked him with his cast. Perfectly legal since Tanga wasn’t his opponent. Juice goes for Pulp Friction again, but Tama counters into a Gun Stun and puts away the IWGP United States Champion. With this win, Tama primes himself possibly into a title shot against Juice Robinson at a later date.

WINNER: Tama Tonga

B Block Match Three: SANADA vs Hirooki Goto

Two years ago Sanada defeated Goto in the G1 Climax, but Goto successfully won their block. Goto however was defeated by Kenny Omega in the finals. The match starts slow, but Sanada demonstrated his athletic ability early leaping over Goto several times and of course dove at him on the outside. During the course of the match, both men delivered some big moves. One point Sanada had Goto locked in the Skull End, but because both men were so sweaty Goto slipped out of the hold. Sanada then tried for a moonsault to no avail. This match was full of counters and several times either man had the match. In the end though, Sanada’s Skull End was turned into a reverse GTR  and then Goto ends the match with GTR to get his first two points.

WINNER: Hirooki Goto

B Block Match Four: Zack Sabre Jr vs Kota Ibushi

Taka accompanied Zack Sabre Jr for the match and gave a rather lengthy introduction. It has been discussed that Taka has taught Zack Sabre Jr the Michinoku Driver which is now known as the Zack Driver. Last year in the G1 Ibushi defeated Sabre Jr. The match started with Sabre Jr keeping Ibushi grounded using many submission holds as expected. Ibushi would keep reaching the ropes and Sabre Jr would keep applying more submissions. Ibushi of course would use his strength advantage over Sabre Jr during the course of the match. Most of the match Sabre Jr had the advantage, but Ibushi was able to break free and gets some moves in from time to time. Eventually Ibushi landed the Kamigoye despite Sabre Jr trying to block it to secure the victory.

WINNER: Kota Ibushi

B Block Match Five: Kenny Omega vs Tetsuya Naito

The finals of last year’s G1 Climax that Naito won are meeting right out of the gates this year. Whoever wins this huge match with set the tone for the rest of B Block. Omega starts off by mocking Naito’s signature taunt. Naito mocks Omega back by doing his signature taunt. Once these two got going though, they went at it. One point Naito ended up in the crowd and Omega got on the top rope and dove all the way into the crowd taking out Naito. As the match progressed, Omega started unleashing the V Triggers including one to the back of Naito’s head. Omega set up the One Winged Angel, but somehow Naito escaped with a reversecarana. The brutal V Triggers continued as Omega landed one onto Naito as he was in the corner and Naito went face first into the pad. Omega tried for One Winged Angel again, but Naito escaped and nailed Destino. Omega somehow kicked out and the match continued. Naito determined to hit Destino, but Omega somehow kept countering and blocking Naito. Eventually though Omega nailed another V Trigger and finally hit Naito with the One Winged Angel to secure two points.

WINNER: Kenny Omega

ON TAP

Thursday B Block action continues and here’s what is coming up!

Sanada vs Tama Tonga

Sanada looks to get his first G1 win while Tama Tonga looks to stay undefeated in G1 action. Perhaps Sanada better bring back up in Evil or Bushi knowing Tama is bringing Tanga Loa most likely.

Toru Yano vs Zack Sabre Jr

Both men will be desperate to win this one and avoid falling 0-2. Will it be Yano’s shenanigans or Sabre Jr’s submissions that prevail?

Juice Robinson vs Kota Ibushi

Juice looks to get out of the gutter, but he’ll have a tough task in overcoming Kota Ibushi as he looks to remain undefeated. Should be a good one here.

Tomohiro Ishii vs Tetsuya Naito

Ishii is going to have a more serious opponent this time around in Naito. Ishii has had success against Naito. Naito however doesn’t want to fall to 0-2 in B Block like heavy favorites Kazuchika Okada and Minoru Suzuki have in A Block.

Kenny Omega vs Hirooki Goto

The only match where two winners from night one face off. Omega and Goto are both respective champions and both want to remain undefeated. Both superstars know what it takes to win G1 Climax so expect a huge match in this main event.

That does it for me! Thanks for reading and keep following me on Twitter @ChairmanSV for the latest and keep watching NJPW G1 Climax.
