WWE Smackdown Live Hits and Misses 12.18.18 w/ The Chairman

The WWE landscape has changed in recent days with the McMahon family overseeing things and claiming they’re going to give us a better WWE. Whether or not they follow thru remains to be seen, but here is what happened on Smackdown Live.

HIT: Mustafa Ali Officially Joins Smackdown Live

One of the biggest surprises was learning Mustafa Ali is a permanent addition to the Smackdown Live roster. Ali had a great showing last week against the New Daniel Bryan and he has a great fan following. Kudos to whoever made the decision taking him off 205 Live and onto a bigger platform in Smackdown Live. Tonight Ali teamed up with AJ Styles to face the New Daniel Bryan and Andrade “Cien” Almas. Definitely was nice to see Almas get on television again, let alone the main event spot. This was a great match with great action. The biggest surprise though was Ali getting a pinfall victory over the WWE Champion Daniel Bryan. It’ll be interesting to see where this goes next.

MISS: The Miz Still Wants Shane McMahon

Former rival of Daniel Bryan, The Miz, has been reduced to begging Shane McMahon to become his tag team partner. Miz now even is trying to convince Vince McMahon of this vision. Vince told Miz he’d pick his partner and if he impressed him, he’d consider it. Mandy Rose was the partner of Miz meaning we’re getting more Mixed Match Challenge and their opponents were the champions of season two R-Truth and Carmella. The match was quick and Miz got the win with a Skull Crushing Finale on a distracted R-Truth after a dance break. This is one storyline I’m not enjoying and the Miz is so much better than this.

HIT: Tag Division Finally Using Their Depth

For awhile there, it felt like the only tag teams on Smackdown Live were the champion Bar, Usos, and New Day. Tonight the Usos challenged the Bar because they weren’t involved in the decision at TLC. The Club Gallows and Anderson appear for the first time since August according to them and they weren’t going to sit around anymore. The match got decent time and was good to see Gallows and Anderson on television again. The Bar were heading to the ring when it looked like the Usos had things in the bag, but before the Bar made it Sanity showed up and attacked everything in sight. It was definitely nice seeing The Club and Sanity finally being used again. Fingers crossed this wasn’t a one time thing.

MISS: Naomi Gets a Title Match Unearned

Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair both have their sights on the Raw’s Women’s Champion after what happened at TLC. Asuka however showed up and reminded them that she was the champion. This set off Becky and Charlotte to the point Vince McMahon came out. He told both of them to get over it and asked Asuka if she was ready to defend her title. Naomi came out to answer the challenge. Sure it was a fresh match because these two never met one on one before. Naomi however does nothing for me and if they’re bragging about these NXT call ups then how about have Nikki Cross or Lacey Evans appear in this spot? Either or, Asuka retained. Should be interesting to see where the Smackdown Live Women’s Division goes next. How is Asuka going to feel knowing it’s possible Becky and Charlotte are more interested in revenge against the Raw’s champion then pursuing her?

HIT: Jeff Hardy Gets Personal with Samoa Joe

Jeff Hardy and Samoa Joe have been feuding the past few weeks and it’s a shame they didn’t have a match at TLC. TLC was however overloaded to begin with so there was no chance of that happening. Joe wanted to apologize tonight, but Jeff wasn’t having it. The two exchanged words, but Jeff told Joe he didn’t want to return to his past. Jeff then made it a point to remind Joe that he hasn’t won any titles on the main roster in the two years he’s been there. This set Joe off, but Jeff was ready. These two are going to reach their boiling point sooner than later.

MISS: Paige is Removed as General Manager

So since the McMahon family is overseeing everything in WWE again, there’s no need for general managers. Therefore Paige is no longer the GM of Smackdown Live. Shane of course said there would be something for her, but of course the WWE doesn’t even know what they’re going to do with her yet. Maybe she can replace Corey on commentary because nobody wants to hear JBL 2.0 twice a week and keep him on Raw. Guess we’ll see what happens.

With that being said, thanks for reading and as always follow @ChairmanSV on Twitter for my latest thoughts.
