WWE Confirms Dean Ambrose Is Departing The Company
After RAW on Monday night, Wade Keller of PWTorch reported that Dean Ambrose (real name Jonathan Good) would not be renewing his contract with the WWE when it expires in April. Today the WWE released the following statement:
Dean Ambrose (Jonathan Good) will not be renewing his contract with WWE when it expires in April.
We are grateful and appreciative of all that Dean has given to WWE and our fans. We wish him well and hope that one day Dean will return to WWE.
It’s pretty much unprecedented to have the WWE to release this kind of statement before someone’s contract is up. There have been many times when something like this has been reported by the Wrestling Observer and other sites and the WWE just chose to ignore it.
Last night on RAW Ambrose had an interaction with Triple H before losing clean to Seth Rollins. Ambrose then appeared ready to cut a promo after before being interrupted by Nia Jax and having Nia hit him out of the ring.
The news, while out of left field, is not surprising from my perspective. Ambrose has been misused since ever since the breakup of the Shield. And you could make an argument that holds water both times. One of Ambrose’s main problems, according to Wade Keller, is his unhappiness with scripted promos and the hokey stuff that has been going on with his character over the last few months. You can’t blame him. I thought Ambrose was finally going to get the heel run we all wanted when he turned on Seth Rollins. But instead he turned into a lame, by the books heel who made fun of whatever city they were in.
Of course there is already speculation about All Elite Wrestling. AEW won’t even begin to talk with him until his contract expires, or risk contract tampering. Though I’m sure there will be contact made through back channels. It’ll be interesting to see if Ambrose is even used on TV going forward.
With the amount of talent on the WWE’s roster, there should be someone ready to step up and take his spot.
