Hideo Itami Granted Release By WWE
I guess this turned out to be a pretty big last couple days huh?
On Monday night it was reported by the PWTorch that Dean Ambrose would not renew his contract when it was up at the end of April. And it was later confirmed by the WWE.
Late Tuesday night, Sean Sapp at Fightful.com reported that Hideo Itami had asked for and been granted his release by the WWE.
Itami lost to Akira Tozawa on 205 Live Tuesday. At the Royal Rumble on Sunday, Itami took the pinfall loss in the fatal four way match for the Cruiserweight Title. At the time of the loss, I said that Itami eating the pinfall seemed like an indication he might be on his way out the door. And here we are.
Itami had a goo amount of hype coming in from Japan, where of course he was known as KENTA. But he was stuck on 205 Live and never fully got going in the WWE. He is one of the biggest “what ifs” the WWE has had over the last few years. If you remember, Itami was suppose to win the NXT Championship from Kevin Owens at the Beast in the East show in Japan in 2015. But Itami suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out for over a year, and he was never able to recover.
I would expect Itami to go back to Japan, possibly the NOAH promotion which was just sold. NOAH was were Itami performed as KENTA and was his home promotion before coming over to WWE.
