New Japan Pro Wrestling Dominion Results 6.9.19

Jon Moxley defeated Shota Umino

Outside of Umino hitting a dive on Moxley during his entrance, this was a Moxley squash. Moxley said he wanted in the G1 after, then helped Umino to the back.

Shingo Takagi defeated Satoshi Kojima

This seemed like Takagi’s official move up to the heavyweight division. They exchanged forearms on the outside at one point until the 19 count. They both hit big moves on the apron. If this was WWE they’d remind us that it was the HARDEST PART OF THE RING. The match was a good blend of making Takagi look strong but letting Kojima look like no slouch in their either. Takagi won with the Last Dragon. After the match, Shingo joins Moxley in declaring for the G1. So is this just like the Rumble now and you can say you declare?

YOSHI Hashi and Jushin Liger defeat Minoru Suzuki and Zack Sabre Jr.

Yoshi Hashi always looks like the saddest wrestler in the whole world. Cheer up Yoshi, at least you aren’t Baron Corbin! Yoshi gets worked over earlier on and the crowd doesn’t seem to care until Liger comes in and urges Yoshi on. Liger and Suzuki have some brief interactions. I still am waiting for the singles match between these two. And look at that, Yoshi gets the rollup on Zack Sabre Jr. after out wrestling him in the counter department at the end. Yoshi holds up the UK Title after and throws it back down on ZSJ. Imagine Yoshi Hashi being the Champ of all of the UK! Maybe he could help end Brexit talks there.

Hiroshi Tanahashi, Juice Robinson and Taguchi defeated Jay White, Chase Owens and Taiji Ishimorii

I get Juice Robinson wanting to be more serious by cutting off his dreads. But at the same time, it was a unique look for him and now he honestly looks kind of geeky. Meanwhile, Jay White with his goatee looks like he’s a step dad who is the lead singer of a 80s metal cover band. This match kind of gave off the vibe of a good six man RAW tag main event. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Not every match has to be a big four star classic. Tanahashi pinned Owens after a driving forearm to the chest from a reverse DDT position. Owens isn’t even worthy of the High Fly Flow!

Tomohiro Ishii defeated Taichi to win the NEVER Openweight Championship

Taichi tries messing around with Ishii early on, proving how dumb he is. Ishii knocks him on his ass with a solid right forearm. They exchange chops and kicks for a good 30 seconds. Taichi somehow ends up winning that exchange with his leg kicks on Ishii. Taichi ends up getting the upper hand the majority of the match. Ishii starts fighting back but Taichi throws the ref into Ishii. But Ishii blocks Taichi’s low blow attempts and hits a headbutt knocking Taichi down. Taichi is able to hit a powerbomb but only gets two. Ishii hits an enziguri, Taichi follows up with one of his own but Ishii says fuck that and hits a lariat for two. Ishii hits a powerbomb and lariat for two. Ishii follows it up with a drop brainbuster for the win. They did a good job there making Taichi look really good in defeat.

G.O.D. defeated EVIL and Bushi to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship

I like EVIL and Sanada. But the New Japan tag team division is worse off than the WWE Tag Team division right now. Yeah I said it. And I stand by it. I’m still not used to Sanada without the mohawk. The crowd loves Sanada, and I fully expect New Japan to make him a big star by the end of the year. At one point Sanada applied Skull End and EVIL applied the Sharpshooter. Bushi takes out Jado with the mist after Jado used the singapore cane. EVIL and Sanada go for their finisher but Tama Tonga rolls up EVIL and holds the tights for the win. EVIL and Sanada seem a bit off, from a team work perspective, after the match.

Shibata comes out with KENTA, who will also be in the G1.

Will Osprey defeated Dragon Lee to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship

There is a much slower pace to this match to start compared to Ospreay’s match with Shingo. Then all of the sudden, Dragon Lee puts Ospreay on the railing and hits a running dive through the ropes over the announce table. Okay then. Dragon Lee hits a nice tilt-a-whirl DDT and Ospreay comes right back with a Stunner. Another quick exchange with Lee hitting a reverse-ranna and Ospreay coming back with a running Spanish Fly. Dragon Lee runs over the ropes and hits a hurricarrana but Ospreay lands on his feet. Ospreay powerbombs Lee on the apron then hits a shooting star press for two. Ospreay goes for the Os-Cutter but Lee knees him in the back. Lee gets Ospreay caught in the ropes and double stomps Ospreay on the outside. Lee hits a Mexican Destroyer for two. Ospreay comes back with a top rope Os-Cutter then the Stormbreaker for the win.

Hot Take Incoming: Shingo/Ospreay was better than Lee/Ospreay and it is 100% because Shingo is a better worker than both of them.

Tetsuya Naito defeated Kota Ibushi to win the IWGP Intercontinental Championship

Naito is fully embracing the heel role early in this match, and the crowd is booing him for it. Look at the New Japan crowd actually being normal wrestling fans. Naito lands some extra kicks in the corner and paint brushes Ibushi, he even rakes Ibushi across the eyes. Ibushi is finally able to jump over a Naito dropkick and stomp Naito in the chest. They battle for position out on the apron. Naito finally hits a fucking German suplex  and Ibushi’s head goes right off the end of the apron and snaps back hard. It looks awful in slow mo. I have no clue how he didn’t break his neck. Naito follows it up with a reverse-ranna off the top. Ibushi hits a package tombstone and I guess these guys don’t care about having necks at 50. I know Ibushi is a good seller but I’m quite confident he is in la la land right now. Ibushi misses the running knee and Naito goes right into Destino for two. Ibushi blocks the second attempt and hit a powerbomb for two. Naito then comes back with a DDT. Naito then hits a reverse DDT off the top for two. Ibushi blocks Destino again but Naito goes into a reverse-ranna then a spike dvd for two. Naito then connects on Destino again for the win.

I said on the HTCWrestling Podcast that the winner of this match would lead me to my G1 prediction. With Naito winning, I am now leaning towards Ibushi winning the G1.

Kazuchika Okada defeated Chris Jericho to retain the IWGP Heavyweight Championship

How can they not air Jericho’s own song? Does he not own the rights to it? That’s weird. Jericho does a bunch of stalling early on. My guess is because he doesn’t want to gas himself out since this is likely going 30. Jericho is in control early on and keeps screaming “OKADA” to try and get the crowd to cheer it. It finally works after the fifth or so time. Okada finally flapjacks Jericho. Okada goes for his dive over the railing but Jericho catches him with a Codebreaker mid air, barely. They counter tombstone attempts until Jericho applies the Walls. Okada gets to the ropes. Jericho argues with Red Shoes and turns around into an Okada dropkick. Okada hits Jericho with a dropkick off the top and tombstone. Okada hits a top rope elbow and goes for a Rainmaker but Jericho counters with an enziguri. Jericho stops himself in the ropes and hits the Lionsault. Okada runs right into another Codebreaker for two. Jericho goes for a Rainmaker but Okada ducks and hits a Codebreaker of his own. Jericho ducks another Rainmaker and goes back to the Walls. Okada ducks the Judas Effect and goes for the Rainmaker. Jericho ducks and goes for a rollup but Okada sits down and pulls over Jericho’s legs for the win.

After the match Jericho beats up Okada. He throws Okada into the post with a chair around his neck. He goes to put Okada through a table until Tanahashi stops him. Jericho celebrates after like he won the Title.

The show was fine. There were no match of the year candidates on it but it was a solid wrestling show. That’s three straight weekends of good wrestling shows. Your move, WWE.

Until Next Time,
