NJPW G1 Climax B Block Review 7.15.19
Toru Yano vs Shingo Takagi
Your basic Yano comedy match, which I really have no problem with as long as stuff gets changed up. And it did. Yano ran down the exit aisle at one point and baited Shingo In. He then trapped Shingo in the aisle and Shingo just beat the count in. Yano then tried pulling an Eddie Guerrero and tried convincing the ref Shingo hit him with the chair. Bushi then came out to distract the ref, allowing Shingo to throw the chair in Yano’s face and hit the running lariat for the win. Shingo needed that win.
WINNER: Shingo Takagi
Juice Robinson vs Hirooki Goto
And now on to the real wrestling. They are really doing a good job on commentary trying to sell you on Goto possibly winning. And to his credit he is in really good shape. Perfectly acceptable wrestling match between these two. They each blocked the others signature punch with their heads. Juice ended up hitting a couple headbutts that set up Pulp Friction for three.
WINNER: Juice Robinson
Jon Moxley vs Jeff Cobb
I was kind of surprised how they treated Cobb in this match. He barely got any offense in outside his basic stuff. Moxley worked over Conn’s left shoulder. They did a spot where Moxley ran at Cobb on the ramp. The first time Moxley at a right and the second time they double clotheslined each other. The problem was it looked in slow mo both times. Moxley won with a Death Rider with Cobb in the middle rope. Wasn’t high on this one.
WINNER: Jon Moxley
Tomohiro Ishii vs Jay White
I was interested to see how these two would work together considering their different styles. They did not disappoint. White continued to taunt Ishii during the match until Ishii finally snapped. These two worked great together. White laid down at the end to avoid Ishii’s sliding lariat but Ishii readjusted and hit it from the opposite rope. Ishii won with the spike brainbuster and is already living up to his G1 reputation of having great matches.
WINNER: Tomohiro Ishii
Taichi vs Tetsuya Naito
You can tell Naito is saving himself for big matches down the line. Things moved pretty slow early on in this one. Taichi went to the Iron Glove multiple times and was foiled until the third time, when he used it with the ref distracted and then hit the Last Ride for the win. I’m not a Taichi fan so I wasn’t into most of the match. Something about him doesn’t click with me.
With Naito and White both 0-2, my new theory is they go on a win streak until their match on the final night.
