NJPW G1 Climax 29 B Block Results 8.1.19

Shingo Takagi vs Jeff Cobb

This match was a battle of strength between both men. Shingo matched Cobb power move for power move. Shingo worked over the leg of Cobb early on to try and chop him down to size. Cobb was able to hit his signature moves and go to the top, but Shingo met him up there and hit a Superplex for two. An exchange of offense again until Shingo ended up hitting a Pumping Bomber for two. Shingo hit Made in Japan for two. Shingo went for a Last of the Dragon but Cobb countered and hit Tour of the Islands for the win.

WINNER: Jeff Cobb- Very good power match here. I’m really questioning the booking of the juniors in this tournament. I would have expected more points from Shingo and Ospreay at this point. Hell, I thought Ospreay would win A Block!

Jon Moxley vs Toru Yano

Yano is hesitant to start. Yano offers his DVD with 6000 yen to Moxley but Moxley kick it away. They go to the outside and Yano gets tape. But Moxley throws Yano into the railing and taps Yano to it. Yano gets back in at 19. Yano offers a handshake but Yano rakes at the eyes. They both go for the turnbuckle pad. Moxley knocks Yano’s out. The ref grabs his and Yano hits a low blow and roll up for two. Moxley punches Yano and hits a Regal knee. Moxley sets a table up on the outside with Yano on it. Yano grabs Shota Umino and puts him in front of Moxley. Yano low blows both of them and tapes their feet together, allowing Yano to get the countout win.

WINNER: Toru Yano- Yano has now beaten block favorites Moxley, Naito and White. Typical Yano shenanigans match. Moxley is protected with this type of loss. And you could tell Moxley was trying not to crack up during the whole match.

Tetsuya Naito vs Juice Robinson

Both men take their time removing their entrance attire. Juice even has three shirts on. Naito tried to constatnly get under Juice’s skin the whole match by doing his punches. Juice did the same by doing Naito’s pose after faking a dive to the outside. Naito suckers Juice to the outside and hits a Tornado DDT even though it didn’t fully land. Naito also hits a running dropkick to the back. Naito hits his signature corner dropkick and Naito again mocks Juice’s chant. Naito spits on Juice and starts to do the Juice punches but Juice blocks the last one. Juice lands some punches then hits a high kick. Naito hits an enziguri but Juice catches Naito going for a forearm and slams him down. Naito counters a powerbomb into a hurricarrana. They go to the top. They battle for position and fall off too early. They go back up and Juice hits a Frankensteiner and follows it up with a powerbomb for two. Naito counters Pulp Friction into a German suplex and hits a DDT for two. It looks like Juice came down on Naito’s ear which is bleeding. Naito hit a short DDT for two. Naito hits a rolling heel kick but Juice blocks Destino after an awkward “what should I do” exchange. Juice hits a lariat and goes for Pulp Friction but Naito escapes and hits a brianbuster and follows it up with Destino for the win.

WINNER: Tetsuya Naito- That match was definitely off. There were three spots where it looked like there was miscommunication between them. And Naito’s ear also got busted open. I was expecting better from these two.

Jay White vs Taichi

Lots of stalling from both men early on. White and Taichi then back a young lion and Geto into each other, and they finally start fighting until the count gets to 19. Taichi gouges White’s eyes but Gedo grabs Miho Abe to distract Taichi. Jay White attacks him from behind. White lands some kicks in the corner, but Taichi reverses him and lands one of his own. White drops to the mat for Taichi’s kick. They have a brief exchange of kicks and punches. White ducks a Taichi and hits a Kiwi Crusher for two. White hits a Saito suplex but Taichi pops up and hits one of his own. Taichi lands some kicks but Gedo jumps on the apron. Taichi blocks a low blow and lands a kick of his own and knocks Gedo off the apron. Taichi goes for the pin but Gedo pulls Red Shoes out. Gedo attacks. After some more shenanigans involving Gedo and Kenamaru, Taichi hits the Last Ride powerbomb for two. Gedo grabs Taichi’s leg. Kenamaru pulls out Gedo. They have an exchange of counters. White ends up hitting a brain buster and the Blade Runner for the win.

WINNER: Jay White- This almost felt like a peak WCW overbooked mess. I kind of expected it coming into the match given the two wrestlers involved but I think they went way overboard. Still some decent wrestling in between all of this though.

Hirooki Goto vs Tomohiro Ishii

Each man gets some strong style offense in early on. They each knock down the other. Ishii backs Goto into a corner and hits a barrage of forearms and chops. Goto comes out of nowhere and turns the script with a barrage of forearms. They go back to the center of the ring where forearms are exchanged again. Goto finally gets the better of them but runs right into an Ishii powerslam. Goto ducks an Ishii clothesline and hits one of his own. He takes Ishii to the top and hits a top rope neckbreaker for two. They go back to the top and after an exchange of forearms again Goto hits a sunset flip powerbomb for two. Both men no sell lariats but Ishii ends up knocking Goto down with one. Goto slaps Ishii and Ishii ain’t having any of that shit. Ishii hits some nasty forearms then a powerbomb for two. Ishii hits a German suplex and a sliding lariat for two. Both men block brainbusters. Goto ends up hitting a neckbreaker. Goto applies a sleeper then hits a neckbreaker. Ishii fights back and they exchange headbutts. Ishii eventually goes down. Goto hits a GTR then a chest kick for two. Goto with a head butt to Ishii, and he follows it with a Yushi Giroshi and GTR for the win.

WINNER: Hirooki Goto- If you like strong style like I do, this was just delightful. It looked like these two were legit beating the shit out of each other at times during the match. A big win for Goto, who looked the best he has since the Jay White match.
